I can't believe it.... I'm seeing combines out in the fields already in N. Illinois. Last year the corn was still in until mid-nov. Curious to see if anyone knows if the corn maturation is well ahead of schedule ? Let em roll.

I heard on WNAX that SD silage harvest is 33% complete compared to 7% last year. A good indication we are ahead of schedule.

USDA is reporting that guys are combining corn in Iowa. This brings up an interesting point. When do we start getting UGUIDES weekly harvest report.

Its very likely the farmers used a 90-day variety. The last few years up here in SE NoDak have been wet ones. I've helped out on the farm those years and last year being the worst, we finally pulled the combine out of the field Dec 18th - leaving 1 field still standing throughout the winter.

So I wouldn't doubt other farmers are using a shorter day corn so it's not too late.

Are you concerned for adequate cover for the birds because the corn is coming off much sooner?

I'm really worried about the 1.5 year old deer. They are going to wonder where the standing corn is this winter!!

SD FIELD CROPS REPORT as of August 30th

Ninety percent of corn is at or beyond dough stage, 26
percentage points above the previous year and 8 percentage
points above the five-year average. Fifty-three percent is at
the dent stage, above the 5 year-average of 42 percent. Corn
is estimated at 2 percent mature, 1 percentage point behind the
five-year average. Harvesting of corn silage began last week,
and is 7 percent complete compared to 2 percent last year.
Seventeen percent of soybeans are dropping leaves, 5 points
ahead of the five-year average of 12 percent. Sunflowers
advanced 19 percentage points in the ray flowers dry stage,
now estimated at 35 percent. Sorghum is 63 percent coloring,
a 23 percentage point jump from last week. Producers have
planted 4 percent of the winter wheat, which is equal to the
previous year.

Silage corn? They are getting ready for the second harvest around here, and will probably get one more crop in. But maybe that's why they farm every square inch and we don't have any pheasants left.

This is what I'm seeing in the area I hunt. A KDWP man from this site actually used the words "parking lot" to describe the area b/c of the intense farming practices. This is the big reason why I'd like to own or lease a 1/4 section of CRP there.........good cover is the limiting factor!

I'd say crops will be long gone by chicken chasing season. Some Farmers are talking about starting this week. Better hunt hard the first week or two of the season won't be many left after that numbers are way down:( But then again i've had great seasons before when they said numbers were bad you just keep trying.

My cousin started combining corn Monday. They got quite a bit done and he is actually stopping at nights this year because they are far enough ahead of schedule. Talked to the pioneer seed rep in Britt and he said that they were 5 to 8 days ahead of schedule.

The farmers out here are done havesting the grain. Quail open on Oct.2 so I'll be ready to go with Tony...............Bob

I was hopeing we would get started on Mon. That is not going to happen for a while. 6+ inches south of Siouxfalls. They were harvesting in NW IA but we got 4+ around me and more north.

My cousin just got home last night and said that the fields went from great to mush pretty quickly yesterday.

Bman, I think it is a little drier up in your area. the sky opened up again last night. We must have got at least another inch or two. Forecast dry all week now and will need that to dry out. Temps are cooking down though so will take longer to get in fields.
