Close flushing rooster

I take off the breast meat and thighs, those are fried or done up in the oven.
I take it a step farther, Ribs, back, neck and all goes in the pot for soup.
No I ain't starving by any means, just enjoy using the whole critter.
Bone it off when meat is falling off, pretty easy. All can be done with 1 maybe 2 cold ones.

SMO, wild rice soup ehhh, :)
I'm going to get some bubbling.

I shoot a full choke 12, I let the bird get out there a ways, don't have much trouble.

I seem to shoot much sooner if there are not many birds around, and I will wait for the rooster to get further out if there are a lot of birds around. Human nature I suppose? I also seem to pass up lots of difficult shots if I'm hunting in an area that has lots of birds, and sometimes catch myself taking near impossible shots if bird numbers are low.

I probably need to concentrate on hunting the same way no matter what the bird numbers are. Never really put much thought into it until I read this post.

i think that is what kids do when you first take them hunting, good luck changing that.

cheers

Ol' Musti is just grouchy because he knows my slow dogs get more quail contacts in one hunt than his will get all season.

Yeah, I do the same thing. I think when we work hard for a bird or two there's built up anticipation of bagging a nice rooster vs. seeing many birds and knowing you'll have another chance if a bird gets away.

P.S.--welcome to the site monte:)

Exactly why I don't like large hunting parties. Two to four people is plenty and you reduce the chances of someone blowing the bird to smitherines! LOL!

skin thickness

Thanks for the advise.

I feel much better after reading some of your previous posts. I was afraid you were just being a smart a$$ to me, but it is obvious that you treat everyone the same. :D

don't get a thin skin around here even if you are using the right kinda dog. it don't work.

cheers

tail feathers

talking of speed, or lack of, that's why the dog returned with just the tail feathers, couldn't run fast enough to catch the rest of the bird, you are probably lucky that quail really don't have any tail feathers or you would go hungry

cheers

I tried the tendon removal trick. It work pretty good actually. Still leaves a couple, but it sure is a lot better than not doing it.

I like close flushing birds, therefore I shoot skeet/imp cyl. I don't/ won't take a long shot when I'm choked that way..

We use wide open chokes as well, my son's O/U 28 is cylinder.IC and my hammer double 12 is cylinder/cylinder:)
He shoots 7/8 oz of 7 1/2's and I normally shoot 1oz of 7 1/2's- all plated shot so we don't drag feathers into the meat.
We normally do not get too much in the breast as we concentrate on leading the birds but at times have blown wings off or strafed the back on an "away" bird.
My 28 is choked IC/MOD and I have taking some longer shots but for the most part the roosters we shoot are pretty close, 30 yards at the outside.
