Cheyenne Bottoms

How is the waterfowl hunting around Cheyenne Bottoms? We are thinking about heading that way in a few weeks for some hunting.

Also, are there much for pheasants around there? I know that Kansas upland populations are way down, but I would think there would still be some birds around.

Thanks

Not sure about the waterfowling there. If it's anything like the Quivira Nat'l Wildlife refuge though, it'll be a miracle if there's any water around.

I have friends that guide in the area.......good luck is all I can say. There is very limited water and LOTS of competition for it. As far as pheasants go, there are a few walk in areas close to the bottoms, but as you might guess, they get hit pretty hard.

A lot of first time visitors to KS are going to be disappointed this year, given that they've probably been told it's a land of milk and honey and abundant opportunity. We need water south of I-70 BAD, in every shape and form available. Until we do (and we will!), results will not meet the expectations of MANY, residents and non-residents alike.

There are some pheasants on the bottoms I have shot them there over the years. With the water being way down, it will actually be easier to hunt pheasants because it won't be as swampy and wet. I got into some there a few years ago when it was bitterly cold and froze up and just shot the heck out of them. They weren't used to people hunting them in the swampy muck.

Is it tough to even get a spot for water fowling? I know that pools 3B and 4B are flooded right now, but that appears to only be about 2 square miles of water.

Remember it's all non-tox for pheasants as well as ducks. It's in the area hit hard by this drought and heat. You may be driving by better stuff coming from the west than you'll find there.

I had a friend just returned from a short week hunting the bottoms. Shot heck out of ducks. Said there were about 30,000 birds in the area and more coming in the last few days. hunter average for the season on the Reserve 3+ per day. Limited water has concentrated the birds, anywhere there is water you will get shooting, crowding was not to bad even on the weekend. Just a note, things change real fast on that area, two weeks may be a ghost town or 100,000 more birds, some areas may be closed from timeto time, do to migrating whooping cranes, no drawing, hike in, it's a long slog to get to the really good spots most of the time.
