Best boots for sand burs? I'm guessing they will be rampant this year out in western KS. I've never used boots of any kind before, but have had encounters with the burs in dry years past. Seems like I get just as bloody pulling them out of the dogs feet as the dogs get in the first place...

for the dog...Lewis Dog Boots!

for you...you're on your own.

Second for Lewis Dog Boots

Lewis are pretty effective. You can get one size for the front and another for the rear (most dogs' front paws are larger). Lewis are not the easiest to use and take some time to put on properly starting with an underalyer of stretchy first aid tape but they are protective. The denier boots featured on the website linked in another post look promising. One thing I've learned is that the velcro straps will not keep the boot on the dog. Duct tape is necessary.

Regardless of brand chosen, get the boots - it has literally doubled my "honey-hole" access!!! We now cover many bird-filled places that no hard-azz dog (regardless of claims by owner) could go 20 feet without every paw full of sandburs be4 & with very little company/competition I might add... :D

well said- arround here it's burr country- possibly rather good because the coyotes won't go in the fields- just have to smile

I had Lewis boots back in the 70's- clop clop

I use these http://www.dogbooties.com/products/10dencorboot.html. they are cheap easy to put on and work great, Need to wrap some duct tape around the top and the wont come off. Order extras cause they will wear through after about 30 days.
Tried the lewis boots and what a pain to put on.

30 days- hum- they weren't tough enough here- burrs were sticking in them and some into the dogs feet- holes in the front of them after 12 hours-

i use the ruffwear boot, make sure they fit correctly, i had a bit of trouble with them turning at first but after i learned how to put them on right they work great, havent had one come off at all, we have these things called goatheads as well as prickly pear cactus and i havent had a problem yet.

My setter Ace doesn't wear boots often, but he like Danner Pronghorns.
Kind of expensive buying 2 pair, and sizing is tough :D

I use the ruffwear and really like them. just make sure you get them sized right. Too big and they will turn but i have never had one come off my GSP, we have goatheads and prickly pears here.

I've got pictures of my Britt with a cap on- I'm game- you get yours out in the field with those Danners- I'll get mine out with Browning boots

Ha ha... My kids probably have old shoes that wouldn't be too far off on the sizing... They are pretty hard on shoes though. I don't think we've outgrown a pair of sneakers yet. When it's time for a new pair of shoes for the kiddos, the old ones are pretty much destroyed. It would be funny seeing the dog in kids' shoes though...

Got my dog boots in the mail a couple days ago. OOPS, they "accidentally" put a garmin astro in the box too... Honey, I don't know what happened, really....;):D At least I qualified for free shipping.:D

Anyway, had the dog try them on and I think they are going to work great. This was her first time wearing boots of any kind. WHAT A STITCH! She sounded like a horse galloping across the driveway. Wife and I laughed so hard at her antics for the first few minutes... Next time I have a few  I will be sure to "condition" her to the boots again.:D

Seriously though, she totally ignored the boots whenever I was throwing the dummy for her so I can only hope that she would pay no attention to them in the field either. Thanks to some PM tips, I got the LCS cordura burr boots. The pic on their website shows that they are green, but the ones that came in the mail were hunter orange. A pleasant surprise for me...

Toad,

Just don't forget and leave the boots on the dog in the back of the truck for any length of time. They will chew them off. :)

EXCELLENT TIP:thumbsup:

I can tell she would prefer to eat them if she ever has the chance.

Toad- gets even funnier when you hit a rooster pretty good- dog takes off for retrieve- rooster comes to life and hits the afterburner- dog heads for high gear- slips on the high speed turn and crashes

take a picture next time you put them on
