Best Public land to hunt in Kansas?

I have made a last minute decision for this weekend to get a non-res hunting permit to hunt in Kansas. However I no absolutely nothing about Kansas.

Can someone please point me in the right direction with regards to which public land would be best for hunting quail and pheasants (with a dog – GSP) and primitive camp?

Thanks in advance.

Anywhere from Salina to Goodland, then down to Hugoton and back over to Wichita.....there are opportunities literally across the entire state. Camping...can't help you there. Just start calling around to hotels. As soon as you find a town w/o a single room left available, you know you've found a traditional hotspot. Scouting is the only method for finding the best public locations to hunt. If your goal is to harvest one rooster on your first trip, find a place in the area I started this post with.

well put. kansas west of salina. just go online and check out the 2010 fall hunting atlas. find a spot with reasonable wiha tracts and ur set.

For primitive camping spots, take a look at the Kansas State Parks.
Nice campgrounds with some amenities in winter.
Many of the parks have State Wildlife Areas adjacent to them and WIHA areas close by.

thanks for the reply's... it looks as though we will tryout "Pratt Sandhills" Wildlife Area maybe we might find a bird or two. thanks

Dont want to Pee in your cheerios - but if you want to avoid crowds you might best be served to go elsewhere. Its good for quail but there will be every tom dick and jane from OK, AR, TX, MO (and a few locals) etc crawling all over the place the first 2-3 weeks.

If lots of people and competition for hunting spots drive you nuts like it does me, Id go a little further west.

If not get there early and wear plenty of Orange. You might bring some steel shot with you to try the Texas Lake area too. Its not too far away from the Sandhills.

No.... Thanks. That's the kind of feed back I'm looking for. I'm a new at this so all advice is welcomed.

Theres no hook ups at pratt, but u can camp there.Theres also sand spurs at pratt, might want to bring dog boots.

Who shot who's dog with what?

I used to know a mexican gentleman, who when asked where the best authentic mexican food was near Kansas City, would ponder the question, and say " the nearest place to here to find authentic mexican food to Kansas City, was Ft. Worth! In that vein, the best public ground in Kansas, to send you to, is the one with gads of birds and no other hunters. Study and do your homework, put some mileage on the rig. it's called hunting, not guided shooting, though that's available if you want it. Good Luck.

I like Ponak's Mexican Kitchen when in Kansas City. :)

Ponak's

I agree, Margarita's on the bld. pretty good too! but I'm torn, if I get that far down, I have to consider Rosedale BBQ right down the road. Maybe we can arrange an evening of pheasant boosters next summer down there. It will probably have to be then due to everybody being out west!

Been quite awhile now since I was at Ponak's. My oldest son had lived in Roeland Park, so we went there quite a bit. Now he lives within a few blocks of my youngest son in NKCMO, just NE of Zona Rosa, so we eat up that way.

I have had Joe and Matt at Bichelmeyer Meat process elk for me. And been in a BBQ class with Joe's brother-in-law, Paul Kirk, KC Baron of BBQ.

Davis08, Because your a Texan I will try to hook you up. I used to hunt that area alot. There's a RV park and motel called the Evergreen Inn on Hwy 54 just west of Pratt they have showers and a bird cleaning area and there is a good diner there too. I would get the WIHA map and make a triangle starting it at Pratt and go West as far as your willing to drive, I have hunted that whole area and you really can't go wrong, there is a lot of CRP and a lot crop land. But you will see a lot of hunters it's crazy on public land for the opener. You really can't say that one area is better then another because it's all been good for the last several years. Don't forget your dogs boots you will need them. Hope this helps you have a good hunt and let me know how you did.

Hunting Closer to home

Hi i have been going to Kansas for five years now i usually go twice a year i live on the Western slope of Co i usually go to Hill city early in the year and to Pratt later in the year .
I will only be able to go ones this year and waned to go some place with out the crowds lick hill city can get .I have noticed a lot of public land around Hamilton and Kearny area was wondering if it was worth the trip any info would help not locking for anybody spots just wondering if it was worth the trip.

Thanks Cameron

texasbirdhunter, thanks for the help... as I mentioned I'm a newbie and ultimately the experience and several trips will help me to know what's best. However I thought to asked the question on here I might get a leg-up, which I have ;). So a big thanks for helping out and pointing me in the right direction. YES dog boots... I put them on him for the first time last night he had us cracking up walking all goofy around the house but he got use to them.

I wish it was a few weeks later I'd meet you out there, that's a good area. More than a few years back we camped in a camper in the pratt walmart parking lot on opening weekend. We had a blast and walmart never said a word. It will be crowded for sure but so what. I'd stick to the "walk in areas" they usually are better than the state areas for us.

Davis08, You won't need the dog boots all the time but some places like north of Greensberg is full of sand burrs usually around the edges of the fields. Better to have them and not need them. I don't get into them south of 54 like I do north of the highway. Good luck it's a good area to hunt

"BEST" public land in all of KS to hunt???

Hahahahaha - A toll's a toll, a roll's a roll, & a troll's a troll - Trolls don't get no roll if they don't pay no toll (just like the rest of us) - a little spin-off from 'Robin Hood: Men In Tights'! :p
