Best Public land to hunt in Kansas?

Ponak's

Been quite awhile now since I was at Ponak's. My oldest son had lived in Roeland Park, so we went there quite a bit. Now he lives within a few blocks of my youngest son in NKCMO, just NE of Zona Rosa, so we eat up that way.

I have had Joe and Matt at Bichelmeyer Meat process elk for me. And been in a BBQ class with Joe's brother-in-law, Paul Kirk, KC Baron of BBQ.

M.R. ,

My buddy is manger that place and your right they have great food! Let me know if you are in town and I'll point you to some other good places...my brother is an Exec Chef here in KC. He doesn't hunt but likes to come out and be the camp cook!

Good luck this weekend!

"BEST" public land in all of KS to hunt???

Hahahahaha - A toll's a toll, a roll's a roll, & a troll's a troll - Trolls don't get no roll if they don't pay no toll (just like the rest of us) - a little spin-off from 'Robin Hood: Men In Tights'! :p

Yeah, sounds very familiar to an "ass is a ass" and a "hole is a hole" ;) lol... no worries my dues will be paid ten fold I hope, which means all the more hunting. It never hurts to ask for a fellow brothers opinion and there have been some helpful response.

@Davis...LOL, it's all in the wording dude -you left yourself wide open - just couldn't resist!

I saw the info that everybody gave you, and if you're a hunter & that dog's any good you will find birds - there's plenty of 'em to go round for everybody in the western part of the state this year! Focus in on a county or two of your choosing after much careful research and get busy burnin up some gas & boot leather - trust me it will werk!!!

However, it is hard W-O-R-K & I don't give out any specifics (beyond general pheasant-holding areas) of what I've busted my @__ to collect. Heck, I'm still a newbie in pheasant country & don't have all that many honey-holes of my own yet.

As to public land...you would be much better off making another trip back LATE in the season. In my experience, some of the very same parcels that are an absolute circus/zoo on the opener & often pretty much devoid of birds - can really SHINE after the crowds are gone & the going gets tough!!! After a couple years of "weeding" thru 'em all on foot in my area here in CO, I know of a handful that ALWAYS hold birds & a couple that are usually LOADED - but only I & a carefully chosen few will ever know about it, or they won't stay that way for long!

The best of luck to you!!! You will be guarding your own territory be4 long - unless you want to save me a lot of scouting & clue me in on a couple of the very best spots you find to expand my arsenal! :D

yes, I think we decided is to camp at Clark State Lake and look for the "honey holes" in the surrounding areas. I have mapped out areas looking at the geological train ect... and then we go from there. I know this, we will give it an absolute best try!
If by chance anyone is at Clark State Lake and sees a black truck with a BBQ smoker come on by Friday and Saturday evening as we will be kicking back.

Very nice........Pretty funny stuff!

Oh yes, the intersection of Arkansas Street and West 53rd. Always holds birds. Just start on the north side and walk south, spreading your group wider as the field widens (pie shape field). Be careful of the badass dogs at the "farmstead" on the west side about midway down.

Does the 08 refer to your class? If so i am '89. anyway, I've been watching this thread because I've had the same idea of a hunting trip and camping. will probably take my boys up over christmas break. After looking over the WIHA maps, i had kind of settled on the Meade area, camping at the state park there. Since its just down the road from where you're going I'd appreciate any reports. If anyone has better suggestions, they would be greatly appreciated. I've hunted KS the last 3-4 yrs but it has always been on company trips-guides, outfitters. This will be my first time to try the walk in areas. Good luck to all this weekend. Be safe and have fun.

A&M. I take it you aren't an aggie. I just found this site while back, lots of good info. How did a central texas boy get so hooked on pheasants? are you originally from KS?

I am '91 from A&M. Figured you were too as I only known Aggies to go by "what class are you".

As far as getting hooked on pheasants....I lived in Ks from age 6 to 16 and my dad was introduced by his work buddies, then I was going along at an early age. Missed the hunting after we moved back here and it wasn't until the state started the WIHA program that gave me the opportunity to go back.

alloutdoors, No #08 refers to the year I was married I guess I should change it to my dogs name and the year he was born if I was a true hunter ;)

Camping was great on the north side of Clark Lake beautiful and secluded, primitive... fire pit, table, and there is one out house looking bathroom.

We hunted the heck out of the area I kid not my dog hunted 10 hours each day for two days.... what a dog and only found one spot with 3-4 phaseout and to big covey of quail in the same are which I don't mind showing you on the map.

I am going back this Wednesday - Saturday night to different areas so Ill wait to make a map then.

good story, hour 10 of day 1 my 1 year old GSP gets on point under a tree and I see a meadowlark near by so I think he's after that bird... I tell him to leave it / off and nothing I call his name nothing a little frustrating so I say fine with it and start walking and "BAM" a pheasant comes screaming out of there scars the heck out of me and I finally take a shot only to miss. My dog mad a fool out of me...

I hunted some of that area as well what rig were you driving?

A black Dodge with no birds 1 rabbit and a spare tire as I had the luck of a flat... I did see some of the biggest deer of my live out there. Next year I might pick up the deer tag as well and knock the dust off the old bow

Ha! Always trust your dog, he's the one w/ the nose. Sounds like a great area, if a little short on birds. The quail report is very encouraging. I am hoping we can find some of both. Did you see many other hunters in the area? I'm guessing that by the time we get to go, mid december, it shouldn't be too crowded. Thanks and good luck this week.

Not really, I saw a only a handful of hunters and never had to share a field with any.

Oh crap boys, we've been invaded by Aggies.

I even did the unthinkable and married one a year ago. She's an '03 model.

Blessed with Aggies would be more accurate. Aren't you the lucky one! A wildcat and an aggie living in "missery" - I'll bet ya'll are a popular couple!

No kidding. Our first kid is due in less than a month, lots of purple and maroon in the babies room. The bad thing is he'll probably end up wearing black and gold.
