Hi all, well I,m going to pull the pin and get an Alpha 100, so with that said, do you owners out there think a person needs a holster/cover for the unit? I won't be hunting any woods, just open prairie. The unit will be attached to my Wingworks vest shoulder strap.

Your thoughts please and any recommendations you may have.

Thanks as always!

Greg

Mine is in a holder that is mounted to the strap on my WW vest. I have a lanyard that I run the chest strap buckle through so that there is no way I can loose it.

I put the clip onto the first shell holder on the front of my vest. I also have a lanyard around my neck attached to it. Lanyards are cheap. Those handhelds are not. My first shell holder is now too wide to carry a shotgun shell but oh well, there are seven more.

I have a leather holster from Wingworks--the version without the swivel. I attach the snap hook to the d-ring on my coat so that the screen faces out. Several inches below the d-ring is a small horizontal Velcro tab. You can make a small "loop" with the Velcro tab that will hold the antenna so that the unit isn't swinging back and forth while you walk. That system works really well for me. I also have a paracord lanyard snaked into the holster and attached directly to the unit for redundancy.

Other than my shotgun, that unit is the most expensive thing I carry while bird hunting. The redundancy makes me feel better.

The only thing I don't like about the holster is that you have to take the unit out of the holster to charge it. That seems like a major design flaw of the holster, but one I could possibly fix with a few skillful knife strokes. I just haven't been brave enough to do it yet.

Get the garmin fenix watch links up and you can watch your dogs on the watch face. I never get the hand unit out now, best money I ever spent.

I have an original Alpha.
I use the supplied clip on the WW breast strap. 4+ years. Wore one clip out. Got a new one. I hunt everywhere. Never had a problem.
I bought one of the nice clip on leather holsters. Didn't use it.

As long as you have it attached to something you should be okay. A friend of mine was carrying his in his vest pocket before he got a holster and lost it.

Had this exact thing happen to me in Michigan during the middle of a week long hunt. It wasn't fun. very upsetting to lose that much money. my fault though.....
