A Story of Slob Hunters

On opening day a farmer/rancher friend saw two pickups on abutting property driving in stubble, flushing pheasants and shooting them from the pickups. He called it in and the game warden and sheriff came out and issued citations. They were locals who, according to my friend, do this every year and he got sick of it so he waited for them to show up this year.

Good for your friend. The only way to stop these guys is to turn them in. Unfortunately too many farmers/ranchers are reluctant to do so because they are afraid someone will retaliate.

Although not my cup a tea. I tend to stick to myself and mind my own business. It's not my job to police others. It's something that places like Germany did before the war. Encouraging the public to turn each other in.

Imagine living in a constant state of fear that the police might come to your house without warning and take you away, interrogate you, assault you, seize your possessions, or even imprison you, all without evidence of a crime. Imagine being encouraged to snitch on your neighbors, teachers, friends, and even your family if they said or did something even remotely unpatriotic. If you were a German living under the Nazi regime, these horrific “what ifs” were a reality. Learn about the backbone of the terror, known as the Gestapo, and its far-reaching and terrifying power. "

Agree or disagree with me. The government is encouraging the public to turn each other in all over the place. From building permit violations, game violations, city violations(camper/boat, etc parked in your yard/driveway), Etc, Etc, Etc. You don't have wonder where our freedom is going. every time somebody does something somebody doesn't like. we need a new law against it.

I turn nobody in...and stick to myself. When I use to turn in others. The law gave enough info to the violator that they knew who turned them in. Next thing you have a life long get even battle with someone. I'm not interested in someone vandalizing my stuff for the next 20 years. I already have old battles from this very thing still going on. It's cost me 1 1500lb cow, broken windows, flat tires, etc. Not worth it.

Think before you act...are you willing to risk the poop storm that's likely to follow?

onpoint, what drugs did you take today? :)

I think you are totally over-reacting to this. Most of us feel that the government has too much control in our lives and wants to tell us how to live our lives. But to compare the Nazi's and the Gestapo to something like the TIPS program in South Dakota is IMHO out of line. How else are we going to stop some of these slob hunters if we don't turn them in? These guys just give the anti-gun and anti-hunting factions more ammo. I feel I'm doing my duty and in doing so I'm helping protect my right to bear arms and freedon to hunt by turning these guys in. I turned 2 guys in last year for shooting at deer in a corn field from the middle of the road where their pickup was stopped with doors wide open. And I'll do it again if I run across this type of hunting behavior.

I guess you can do it your way and I'll so it mine. But I have a feeling you are on the short end of this issue.

Seems like common sense is what is in short supply all around our country. I believe in the MYOB principle, but common sense tells me when somebody is being stupid (like racing a truck through a field and shooting from that truck) somebody needs to be "corrected" before somebody gets hurt or killed. Example - If I spank or slap my kid for being disrepectful then you need to mind your own business, but if I'm drunk and beating my wife and kids then I would hope you would have enough balls to turn my butt in so I get "corrected"

Zeb, knock yourself out. When these idiots wreck your stuff to get even, will a deer or a few Pheasants be worth your loss? It wasn't in my case. The 1500lb Reg. prize winning simmental cow they shot was worth at least $1500. She had just been to the county fair in open class competition. All I have now is the ribbon she won. She was gut shot with a 22 from the cemetery next to my pasture. when we called the sheriff, they came out took pictures and said. well everybody has a 22. I can't check everyone in the neighborhoods gun. I was basically told..it was just a cow. She was bloated and unable to be butchered. I found her in the evening when she didn't come home with the rest of the cows. It was near 90 above that day. Then they shot my 3/4ton Chevy suburban windshield several times with a pellet gun. Filled my dads gas tank with foam insulation and sugar, filled his exhaust with it too. Sprayed his garden and lawn with weed killer. Shot the side of his truck with a BB gun several times. It's cost us over $4,000 in damages and the law has done nothing. They say they can't without them catching them red handed. Have you got time to stay up day and night all years, because they do these acts so randomly. All because we turned a neighbor in to the law. You can have all my troubles..I don't want them and will NEVER turn anybody in again. Trust me, the law will do nothing to them when they come wreck your stuff..over and over and over. I'll just mind my own business from now on. I thought we were doing right. until the local law left us with no protection what so ever.

Good advice which I usually follow. My friend just got fed up with seeing it year after year. Moreover, he does not shy away form a confrontation which did occur because he hung around and was in the conversation (briefly) when the warden and sheriff talked to the violators. Who knows, he may suffer repercussions like you did.

Well I sympathize with the fact that the law will not protect you from retribution by those who misbehave. I have dealt with the drunken High School, middle of the weekend night, "mailbox baseball" game, and the "Farming" of the pasture with daddy's 4x4. After approximately $250.00 in mailboxes, set angleirons at the appropriate height to spear a car attempting to get close enough to bash my mailbox. I got one too harpooned like a whale right through the radiator! Called the sheriff, went to court, Kids got a mischief citation and fine, I got a bigger fine for "creating a public hazard". Was admonished to let the sheriff handle it. Yeah right, they did such a bangup job in the first place. Also was something of a public pariah for a while for daring to interuppt the little darlings of the nearby town's elite. Well at least the mailbox bashing stopped! till the next gerneration. So the message is clear. I surely don't like the idea of fools driving around fields shooting out of the vehicle at flushing birds, but I would hesitate to do anything about it, if they knew where I lived or what vehicle I drove. It's ridiculous to say, but if you decide to make an issue of it, it's almost a kill or risk being killed event!

OnPoint,

You are on point.

Let law enforcement do their own work and earn their keep. We don't ask them to do our work. There needs to be a certain amount of "tension" between enforcement and compliance.

75% of laws are quite reasonable and to a large degree will be voluntarily complied with. The other 25%? - remember, this country was founded by a bunch of radical law-breakers. It keeps government in check and common sense in the foreground, not blind compliance.

Creating a nation of zealous snitchs who go about ratting on anyone they perceive to be breaking a law is VERY DANGEROUS.

Mind YOUR business and let law enforcement mind THEIRS - and this will contribute towards a balance between tyranny and anarchy AND peace amoung neighbors and fellow mankind.

Remember the movie "1984"? Every room had a surveillance eyeball that monitored your every move. Does government desperately want to turn everyone into that "eyeball"?

This all said, limited government has its just place and law enforcement officials doing THEIR job deserve our utmost respect and courtesy. If you're caught "holding" at the line of scrimmage, this doesn't mean you should "trash" the ref - he's just doing HIS job.

Well, I wanted to get my post up earlier, but had to go to a meeting. Hate to come lately and jump on onpoint's bandwagon, but that's what I gotta do. I'm torn on this issue. I'm glad that there are people willing to report such crimes b/c like everyone else, I wish people would stop behaving this way. However, I've learned in life that I'm better off worrying about me and my behavior and to let the behavior of others catch up to them....but not on my accord. I'm the retaliative type. I'm not proud of that, but I know how I'd react if someone told on me for something I didn't see as "wrong". Hence, I ain't messin' with folks b/c I don't want em' messin' with me:thumbsup:

I don't know how other states run their programs but the TIPS program in South Dakota keeps the caller completely anonymous to help prevent the retaliation problems. You all can do what you want, I don't care. But I will continue to turn in the slobs that openly and blatantly violate the hunting regulations. I treasure the priviledge to hunt and I don't want these SOB's giving our sport a bad name. Being able to report these guys anonymously is what makes the program work.

Zeb, do you know how many people use the TIPS program as a get even weapon? You would be floored at how many disgruntled ex spouses, neighbors, ex employee's, Etc. call in BS calls reporting that these people have poached game, have too much game/fish in their freezer. shot from their truck, Etc.

Don't think so?

I have had several people brag of doing so. After I had words with my nephews ex wife at my parents house. She made a TIPS call. We had just butchered a couple pigs. Next thing the warden is at my parents house asking to see in their freezer. My folks had to open up packs of the meat to prove their innocence. The bad thing, the call was on me. Me and my father have the same name. The warden was at the wrong house. Over a year later. she bragged of making the call to other family members. That's not the first time I heard of people making similar calls. You have to leave no personal info, just call, start trouble and your in the clear. I have no time for such a flawed system that makes no one accountable for the information being reported.

I'm with you a 100% on not liking the game violations. I say let the law do it's job. Sooner or later these folks will be caught. Then they will only have themselves to blame...instead of you for turning them in.

You do as you like. It's your right to do so.

We have the TIPS program in Minnesota also. Works very much in the same fashion as South Dakotas. Anonymous phone calls with no personal information needing to be left by the caller.

Seriously? Gestapo? Nazzi terror? We're using terms such as this in the same breath as turning in guys for breaking game laws?

The slippery slope argument doesn't work. We as a society determine what is acceptable. By not reporting these people, you are accepting it.

I don't know about KS, but here in MI we're lucky to have one, maybe two COs per county. Expecting them to have eyes and ears everywhere isn't a reality. I will gladly lend them mine to protect our natural resources. And frankly, I'm a little surprised that isn't the general concensus by most here.

I will do what is right and take my chances with retaliation.

Again, TIP's, RAP and any other amateur snitching program is a cure that is infinitely worse than the problem it tries to solve.

It's a different story if you are being directly threatened by a loss of life, limb, or property - go ahead, of course, call law enforcement. But to go around as a self-anointed do-gooder - turning in strangers, friends, acquaintances, neighbors, etc. as you see fit, is just wrong.

Let law enforcement earn an honest living and just make sure you are minding YOUR business and keeping OUT of others. Didn't we learn this lesson in Vietnam?

I completely agree, everyone has the right to do as they see fit, but as for me, I'll be callin em' in. In all the years I have hunted I have seen maybe 3 Game Wardens while out hunting this just proves to me that they need our help, if we want things done we shouldn't complain about them never changing unless we're willing to do our part just my .02

 I'm with you GSP. And I too am surprised as to how many on this site don't see it as we do. It's not a matter of turning in friends, relatives, etc. It's turning the slobs that are giving our sport a bad name.
And NElabaholic, you're right one. When one CO has 1or 2 counties to cover they can't be every place so all we are doing is helping.

I hate to write about my personnel life. But I was a very low grade Federal Law Enforcement Officer for 31 years. I was NOT In Conservation or Wildlife. But the name calling, I was called all of them and even some worse just for doing my job.
The tips on things happening? They were very important to me. They really helped me do a better job and to stop things before they went to far. I feel any help we as Sportsman, can give our CO's, is for our benefit. We are the one's that are going to be the winners in the end..........Bob
