A sign of getting old.

Very early this morning, I wake to the worst cramp (charlie horse) I have ever had. I sometimes get somewhat painful cramps in my calf muscles at night, but this was about mid thigh, toward the inside and the pain was on a entire different level. I am a few hours short on my "myology degree" so I am not sure what muscle that is. Anyway, it was still a bit sore when I got up. I walked a couple miles through snow filled cover and it really hurts now and there seems to be a "knot" there now too. When a muscle cramp gives you, what I suspect is a torn muscle, it must be a sign that you are getting old. Kind of like when a hard sneeze throws your neck out. Getting old, is not for sissies.

Yep, its lack of hydration.

I get them in my quad or hamstring sometimes, almost always after a day of high-stepping through snow while pheasant hunting.

It's not necessarily an age thing either. I started getting them in my early 30's.

Sometimes they are so painful you feel like passing out...and that's right when they go away.

That brings back a memory.

Right out of high school I got a construction job, concrete worker.

First day I got home, laid on the floor and got charley horses in both arms and both legs, fell asleep that way, woke up looking like a sprayed spider.

I keep a bottle of yellow mustard near me at night…I get wicked cramps, but I suck down mustard like it’s mother’s milk..,I get cramps quite often, especially if I don’t take electrolyte pills…I know I don’t hydrate enough.,,mustard usually does the job within 60 seconds

But they shoudn't be tearing the muscle!

B-B, mine usually stop on their own within a minute. I am thinking when I drink a half gallon or so of diet mtn dew during the day, that seems to be the nights with cramps. More water, less dew could likely solve it.

My wife just googled it, say that the turmeric shouldn't be taken if you are on blood thinners....I might be on something like that. Probably in mega doses, to be avoided.

if I anticipate putting on some miles on the kenetreks, I drink 8oz of pickle juice and slam a water or gatorade. My diet soda addiction is a killer but mixing a water in here and there helps. If I neglect these measures I will relax in the recliner and can guarantee cramps in my groin that will make my eyes water. Come to think of it the whole family will have tears in their eyes too laughing so hard at my dramatic response to cramps!

X2 on the pickle juice. Besides a hydration issue, cramps and Charlie horses are often I sign of low potassium. Get a bottle of potassium supplement and they should clear up.

I had that happen to me many years ago. I was hunting and really got sweated up. Super painful, and hit me when I got home. My wife did the call a nurse deal. She had me drinking water laying on the floor and the nurse said get a rolling pin and roll it on my leg. My wife and I laughed about it later.
