hi guys, just a question to see what everyone is using? I was feeding my English pointer Iams (red bag) and he's a beautiful dog but he does work super hard when hunting and we get out alot but I never read the ingridents was just going off of the name so I currently switched my EP (Jay) and GSP (Ruger) to Pro-Plan PERFORMANCE FOOD is anyone using this and is it worth it? I live in California so not alot of market for good hunting dog food. thanks Victor

My dogs were on the pro plan performance but their energy was lacking on warm days. I switched to a high protien/ fat grain free and love their performance now but the cost is high.

Natures variety instinct chicken. I get it at pet co.

My female did great on the pp but my male not so much. Pp is good food, you just have to find what works best for your dogs.

what are you using hound? i have noticed that to on hot days i just thought he doesnt like the heat? do you feed it year around or just in hunting season? heck its always hot out there where your at lol

Its pretty hot out here in California during early season, hell it was 65 this weekend where I was hunting. I feed it year round, 2 1/2 cups per day off season, 3 cups per day training and during season and up to 4 or 5 cups per day on extended trips. My 2 hunted 12 days straight for 4-6hrs a day during our pheasant trip up north with no problems.

heat??????

lol Yep its California but I wont hunt till Thanksgiving week cause I like to hunt birds not SNAKES!!! LOL my EP has no quit no matter what the weather is just want to give him all he needs to do his Job and I will hunt my GSP for the first time this weekend as he just graduated from 5 months of gun dog university and he is awesome the trainer demonstrated everything he learned for about 2 hours my EP is not steady to wing and shot and my GSP is and it is sos awesome to see that so we will see him in action this weekend

tell me why you feed more on trips im guessing cause you think they are more stressed burning more energy?when i go on trips i like canned and a couple hand fulls of dry over the canned pro plan maybe i am doing it wrong ive always kind of thought the dry was kind of hard on them there stomachs?when hunting 3 or 4 days straight am i wrong? i like hearing thoughts on this

Feed Diamond Performance. Dogs do great and have lots of energy.

May just be me, but I still feed the dry when on trips. I feed in the evening after the hunt. I may up the amount a little and on long trips add an egg and some veg. oil on the top.

Like I said we all need to find what works for our own dogs, if it works for you stick with it. I feed more on extended trips because I don't want them to burn all their fat and start losing muscle mass. If we do our part our dogs should be very lean and in shape coming into season. A weekend hunt with 5 days off in between isn't going to get them loosing muscle mass but an extended hunt with no off days will without added calories. Like I said mine ran 12 days straight, most dogs don't have to do this but some do. If we take care of them and know their limits and needs they will be fine.

Oh yeah, I only feed once a day in the evening.

Awesome, I only feed once a day too when I get off from work some of my friends think this is wrong but it works for us and my dog always out perform their dogs lol plus I like to Manitain my EP around 51lbs my GSP might be alil heavier as he is only 14 months and is already taller then my EP , But I do agree on cutting their food back during the summer unless they are jogging with me on a regular basis.

A lot of experts say that feeding once a day is proper for a dog's digestive system. It works for me.

As far as food goes,I suggest matching the ingrediant list of your current food against the brand that I use, which is Taste of The Wild. You can go on their website and compare them. I have been using it for several years after trying all the major brands including the ones mentioned here and finding that my high energy spaniels couldn't sustain themselves as well as I'd like when hunting hard in this West River country, day after day.Taste of the Wild Bison is on the order of 83%digestible while some of the most aggresively marketed brands don't even make 20% iv'e been told.Garbage in,big pile of garbage out.
My spaniel hunted once a day since Nov. 3,at least for a couple hours, and all day long for over three weeks this season. He heals up for the next day's hunt much better, keeps the energy level up in these strangely warm 50-60 degree days, and is rock solid muscle.I'm not wealthy and save a buck wherever i can.But i don't hesitate to shell-out $44 for a bag.Keep in mind the age of the dog though, because too much protein is not good for older dogs.

I feed Diamond Naturals and feed twice a day. I like the ingredients of Naturals and it's reasonably priced. It goes for about 30 bucks again. I've tried just about all of the dog foods, from ProPlan to Taste of the Wild, to Chicken Soup, to Nature's Variety, and have settled on this. If I could afford it, I would feed something like Nature's Variety, but with four dogs, I've found Naturals to be good. It has good ingredients, without a bunch of the crap.

I feed twice a day. I had a dog have issues with low blood sugars and that was a scary thing. I was simply free running him and he stopped, vomited, would not move. I thought he was overheated, but it wasn't. I carried him a mile and a half back to the truck and rushed him to the vet.

Vet checked him over, and gave him a couple bites of food and he was fine. In discussing with the vet, while he understood the worry of dealing with bloat, he suggested a small meal prior to hunting. So, I will feed them a portion prior to going out. Also, this same dog, I almost lost because I didn't feed prior to a hunt and we were hunting in rain and cold, and he simply ran out of energy to keep himself warm.
Mind you he is a vizsla and doesn't have any fur, nor do any of my dogs have a lick of fat on them. They are all in good shape.

Just my thoughts on it.

Oh yeah, one more thing.

They poop once a day. And I'm happy with that, regular too.

I have always fed Purina One which is 26% protein and 16% fat, very good levels. My dog has high energy all day and the dog loves the chicken and rice formula. Feeding a dog food not readily available in any grocery store or Walmart can lead to a situation where the hunter and the dog are on the road, or ready to go, and you suddenly realize you're out of dog food. Switching food might sicken the dog. I don't buy all the hoohaw about hunting dogs needing some special expensive unique super duper dog food. Regular, good quality dog food is as nutritious as needed. With my first Brittany, when I took him in for his one-year-old vet visit, the vet paused upon entering the exam room, looking at the dog and said, "Wow. I don't know what you're feeding him, but he is all muscle."

I also alter the dog's feeding pattern when hunting. On normal days the dog gets half a ration in the morning and half a ration when I get home after work. The day before a day afield, the dog gets all he wants in the evening but nothing the morning of going afield. He gets all he wants after a day afield.

carnivore (kärn-vôr)
1.
a. An animal that feeds chiefly on the flesh of other animals. Carnivores include predators such as lions and alligators, and scavengers such as hyenas and vultures. In a food chain, carnivores are either secondary or tertiary consumers. Compare detritivoreherbivore
b. Any of various generally meat-eating mammals of the order Carnivora. Carnivores have large, sharp canine teeth and large brains, and the musculoskeletal structure of their forelimbs permits great flexibility for springing at prey. Many carnivores remain in and defend a single territory. Dogs, cats, bears, weasels, raccoons, hyenas, and (according to some classifications) seals and walruses are all carnivores.

If you think quality dog food is uneccessary, come out here where we hunt 50-60 days/yr.We can run them with my spaniels through the windblown cane fields and see how they hold-up.I know where my money is.
