LOL, MN, we have some nice areas here. They have a good range here. Thats the hard part figuring out where to go. And then get permission. There is some great public as with any thing, but private is the bomb.
 
There is a lot of difference between old and young of any species. If you were to go out and shoot a couple old sharptails or Sage Grouse. Old birds need to be kicked up a notch to make em edible.:eek:
Young grouse can be just dusted with flour and browned up. :thumbsup:
Same thing with pheasant, I don't think of those wily old cocks being all that tasty. Young ones, great!
I to have eaten many Ruffs! not bad at all. Late in the year when Ruffs are in the buds, they pretty much taste like buds.:(
Blue Grouse, any cook can make em good!:)
Huns make some dang good camp meat, along with the young Sharpies.:cool:
 
If we don't limit this to just birds I would say although my least favorite to clean cotton tail rabbits are hard to beat as far as table fare. I make a mean braised rabbit with apples that is out of this world.:thumbsup:
 
Can't say about any birds other than what we have in KS that I've eaten. My number one spot goes to the bobwhite, followed by dove, teal and pheasant. Prairie chickens are just downright disgusting.
 
No one said anything about the Prim-rib of the sky's. Sandhill crane.

To who every asked about Mergansers. In our duck bind its an offical rule if you shoot one (merganser) you retrieve it because the dog is smart enough not to put them nasty things its mouth. LOL You can smell them 20 minutes before they fly by.

Have you personally eaten a crane? I have and while they taste fine and make a fantastic sausage they are a little tough (chewing the same piece for 20 minutes tough). I would rate them as the bottom round of the sky not prime rib. That honor would likely go to rice eating whistling ducks (mexican squealers).
 
I had Sandhill Crane last year. It was marinated, wrapped with a jalapeno, bacon and cream cheese. Then grilled...Fantastic.
 
Yes I have eaten crane a couple of times. Great eating. I don't remember it being tough to chew. Perhaps its the way it was prepared.

Confusius says, "When you spend more time on preparation, and more money on condiments to make it edible, one doubts the quaility of the of the original dining subject". Bobwhite, all white, always tender, since there are no old birds, a little butter and frying pan, lightly done. Priceless.
 
Actually shoot a limit of Pheasants, give them away and go to the casino and eat all the prime rib and T-bones you want for $12.99....:10sign::cheers:

Edit and cold beer and cocktails delivered to your table...
