Zeb's Colorado Elk

I shot a bull. Not a big wall hanger but he was a 5x6 as you will be able to see in the photo. The hunt was almost too easy. We arrived at the ranch at 2:00 PM on Tuesday. Quickly changed into hunting clothes and headed out on the Nat'l. Forest land. We hadn't walked very long when I spotted an elk about 175 yds. away along the timber. He was behind some brush with his head down grazing. We couldn't tell if it was a cow or bull and then I thought I saw a horn. He finally lifted his head and we could see he was a shooter. He turned and looked in our direction. I had the scope on him but he was still behind the brush. He then took a couple steps forward where the brush was less thick. I shot, he took about 10 steps and went down. I looked at my watch and it was 3:15 PM. The hunt lasted less than an hour. Good thinkg we found him as I don't think there were any other elk in the area. We never saw another track that day or the next went we went back in to get him out.

Be extra careful out there Bleu - it's gonna be a royal B%#$! up in the mountains right where you're going - lots of snow & below-zero temps in addition to the high winds... :(
Hope you get one anyway if you do go! At least you won't have to worry about the meat spoiling... :D
Here's to a full freezer!!!

Great job zeb.. I never been on a successful 2 hr elk hunt. CONGRAT'S are certainly in order ;)

what part of Colorado where you hunting at. Congrads, fine looking bull.

I was west of Pueblo up in the San Isabel Nat'l. Forest. South of McKenzie Junction 5-8 miles.

Congrats on your Bull

I just got back from deer hunting in the San Isabel Natl Forest. No deer, but I could have shot a Bull or Cow everyday I was out but one, it was unreal how many elk were around and how close to the road they were too. Would have killed to have an elk tag :(

Well-done, Zeb. As my Sainted Father used to say . . . "You gotta pick the fruit where you find the tree." Nice harvest.

Wow I have never heard of such luck here in CO ever. You say a ranch, I am guessing you hunted the national forest bordering private that no one else had access to? Never heard of anything like your quick kill in all my years of hunting elk here Zeb. Dang I am jealous

!

ZEB,
Congrats. on the Bull Elk George. Now you won't have to bag as many Phez. to eat!

Looks like I will sneak out for 5 days over Thanksgiving witht the car & two dogs if the wx holds.

Nice bull Zeb. Yesterday I had to chase 5 bulls out of the back yard so my dog could go run. Then at 9:30pm still had to chase a big 6 point out so I could take her out before I put her to bed. And I don't live in Estes Park!

I've shot quite a few elk and none were any where near this easy. The last time I hunted the same area 6 years ago we hiked many a mile for 4-5 days and never saw an elk. And yes, we are able to cross a private ranch to gain access to Nat'l. Forest land that otherwise has limited access. But even then the two days we were up there we never saw another elk track and we had fresh tracking snow. So it was extremely lucky that we stumbled onto this bull. Like the ol' saying goes, "Sometimes it's better to be Lucky than Good!" But then it doesn' hurt to be both!! LOL :D

Congrats there old man that is a nice looking elk. Hope he tastes as good as he looks.....Bob
