Zeb

Hope all is well with him, he's a great guy

Hi guys. I've been around but it's nice to be missed! :)

Gave a report on my Colorado elk hunt in the Colorado forum. I've been out pheasant hunting the past 2 weeks since returning from Colorado but the results have not been good. I finally shot my first rooster last Tuesday that was within a 50 mile radius of Watertown. Even hunted public land west of Redfield for a day and a half and came away without a bird. I hunted 2 days this past weekend in Minnesota and got my 4 birds. I've got a bunch of stuff going on this week so I'm not sure if I'm going to get out. Hope to hook up with SDJIM next week for a hunt. My buddy from Colorado is coming out on Dec. 16th for 4 days of hunting.

I've been on the site just not posting a lot. But I have approved a boat load of new members the past couple of weeks. Seems like new members are coming out of the woodwork.

hey zeb, hear anything about Aberdeen area? I go up and hunt there every year the second week of december. Just haven't heard anything about any results around there.

thanks, it is more about the adventure anyway. Seems like something good happens every year. Last year it was a blizzard on the way up. We always seem to scrounge up a few. Last 3 years or so it was fantastic.

You might check the SD GFP web-site. The local Conservation Officers are pretty good at updating their blogs regularly. Not sure if calling them is proper protocol or not(Busier than the poverbial one-legged man) but they do have their numbers listed in the 2011 handbook.

Trip report - Miller area...

Greetings all,

Just returned from a three-day trip - east of Miller. Rooster numbers are way down, but that';s to be expected this late in the season. Observed lots of hens and they are somewhat bunched; hen carry- over from last year appears to be favorable, but locals report the hatch was damaged by lots of rain.

We were slightly under our limit, not due to low bird count, but poor shooting!

The bright sport for me was my 14 month Golden's performance. I'm teaching him to point and he really gets it! This is a very intense dog and very smart and takes well to training. This is his second trip to SD, but we've had him on birds every week for the past 8-10 weeks and it's paying off.

I was just a bit perplexed about this message and wanted to post my report from the west of Watertown area. I just retured from a 10 day pheasant hunt in the Clark area and was pleasantly surprised at the bird numbers. I have been hunting this area for 5-years and admit that the pheasant numbers are down (I would guess 30-40 percent from the last couple of years) but myself and 2 other guys had no problem shooting limits of birds on public land. I hunted a total of 10 days and ended up shooting 29 birds and my two hunting partners shot their limit everyday. Dont know if this makes it or breaks it but we were putting 4 dogs on the ground and there was little lolly-gagging during the hunts. I just find it hard to believe that a day and a half of hunting near Redfield didn't produce a bird. This message isnt intended to cause hard feelings just wanted to post my report so that others arnt discouraged to getting out and walking a few miles.

Still birds to be had in NE SD, in around the Watertown/Clark/Webster area. Hunted the area a few times this year and have found plenty of birds on private and public. Very little pressure on the public this year due to the early bad reports. We have had great success every time out.

Sure glad someone is having luck in my part of the state. I'm still struggling so in anyone would care to share info on what public land you hunted I would really appreciate it. Shoot me a PM with your phone number and I'll give you a call back. Thanks.

Zeb have you tried your old places up north? If I had ground in SD I'd take you out. Good luck. It would be fun to watch your Britt.

Nope, haven't been back up around Aberdeen. Just haven't had the time. I may head over to the Doland area tomorrow. Then I'm headed down to Platte on Mon & Tues to hunt with SDJIM.
