Youth Opener

Who's headed out in the morning and where are you going? I plan to take my cousin around Russell/Rush county area to start the morning. I'll take my 2 young sons as well but they won't be shooting. We may do some quail hunting in Dickinson or Riley county on the way back home......DEPENDING on the temperature that is. The dogs are gonna get a heckuva surprise come 5am tomorrow:thumbsup: I'll have to hide my truck out front when I'm loading my gear tonight so they won't know what's coming;)

Pass It On - Outdoor Mentors is heading to Garden City with about 20 kids lined up to go, many on their 1st ever hunt. We're hunting w/Tim Telinde of Tallgrass Outfitters and Beaver Game Farm. They've hosted a memorial hunt for Tim's son Mitch who died in an auto accident at 18 yrs old about 5 years ago, every year since the tragedy.

On Sunday, I'll be in Liberal doing a wingshooting clinic for the BBBS and we'll be joined by the SW CO JUCO baseball team. That's always a good time...especially when some of the youngsters beat some of the ballplayers at knockout...lots of good-humored ribbing.

I hope everyone takes the opportunity to take a kid hunting this fall!

I am taking my 2 sons and a friends kids and we are gonna stomp some ground around here and probly end close to noon depending on the weather good luck everyone hopefully i will get a few pics and can post them on sunday

Go get 'em Gove, that's how I spent the last two weekends, hopefully sowing the seeds for the future, so when I'm old, wheelchair bound, drooling in my beard, the girls will roll the old man out to block the draws and field corners. Really, it's the best time of the year, I buck the cover and run the dogs, girls try to position for shots.

GOOD luck, one and all! Give the kids a great memory for us all.

Have fun guys I look forward to some pics. My little guy is a little too small (8 weeks old) but his time will come.

Chris

Excellent morning. Just cool enough for the dogs. Didn't make it as far as I'd planned...didn't need to. We saw at least 25 roosters in the first pass around the edge of a CRP 1/4. He missed a couple getting dialed in, lost a runner, then put down the next 2 with well placed kill shots. He passed up at least 3 more very easy roosters on the way back to the truck.

We then turned our focus to quail and found 2 coveys in the same field. Stopped at a second field on the way back home and found more quail. A box of 7.5's went through the Remington today but no quail were harmed.

On the way out of the last place we tried for quail, we stepped into a weed patch and had to watch 3 hens and 8 well-within-range roosters flush w/o taking a shot. I had the video camera in "standby" and thought I was getting the best multiflush video I've ever taken:eek:.....I'll do better next time.

It's been a few years since I've seen so many birds where they're "supposed" to be:cool: Having the crops out makes all the difference:thumbsup:

It's gonna be a great season gents.

KB,
Great pictures, can't imagine why they are smiling like they are :) looks like they had a great time
GCB i understand your son missed the birds cause his mentor can't hit anything either:)I am glad everyone had a great time and my hat off to all of you dads, uncles and mentors for taking the kids out to enjoy our passion of hunting. :10sign:
GCB one of my friends told me he caught a rattler for you but you know what it is a long time til January and to tell the truth it would be a cold day in hell before I would go get it but he said he would ride along with me to bring it to you. I rather you hit him than me:)
hurry and post those pictures so I know what you look like. GCB I see where you live and I was just wondering you said you got into some quail, and I was wondering if you found them around where you live are were you further east. I was not aware that quail were that far west in Kansas. Also were they bobs are scales.
