My rescued lab, Kallie that i got last winter had to have one of her rear legs amputated in Sept.
She hunted hard but the other lab( older) was better at flushing, and getting the bulk of the retrieves.

The older girl, Cappy got hurt, a partial tear of her acl, on the last trip of the season she didnt hunt but a couple of hours.

that gave Kalli all the hunting time. She flushed a old , old rooster that got dropped, and she did her first old rooster retrieve,.

She will get that mounted , like her 2 older labs with their first old rooster retrieve.

That will be a great memory dustin mudd.

I guess mine was watching my pup really put it all together. We are still working, but when that light came on for her, it was awesome. The last hunt of the year was a great day for both of us!!

Its funny, for as bad a year I had as far as bird numbers this was a memorable season.

I got a new setter pup, that really did a nice job for me at 6-8 months of age. The best experiences with him had to be his first retrieve last Saturday, I knew he could find and point birds, but was not sure if he would retrieve naturally.

This is a good friend of mine with her Irish Setter and the first bird she shot over her dogs point.

I got to hunt with a bunch of friends and their dogs. These are Johns Vs and Ace teaming up on some quail

But getting to take my son, the two dogs and my wife on a hunt with Ace's dame was maybe the best experience

Thanks for the pics, Setternut. Is that Kelli with her show setter?

My most memorable thing from this season was taking a solo trip to SD for 3 days. Just me and my dogs. It was my first solo trip. I am definitely going to do at least one per year.

Tough, tough year for me. Big picture, it was a total beat-down truthfully. I kind of got smacked in the face with the fact that people and dogs can't hunt forever. The body gives out before the desire does, and it's hard to witness. But enough of the negatives, there WERE some positives.

Puppy Junie's first point. And her first retrieve. The bird fell in some REALLY thick grass. My friend didn't have a good mark either, so it was a 5-10 minute search. She found the bird before Daisy, which is really saying something because Daisy is automatic on the dead birds!

Took a newbie out and helped him get his first bird. I was as proud as he was, if not more... And hopefully started a new annual hunting trip. I think he's hooked.

I also got back together with a really good fishing and hunting buddy who has been away for the last two seasons. THAT was definitely a highlight!

Anyway, this year mostly felt like "paying your dues" if you know what I mean. The short-term payoff did not match the effort that got put in. But... hopefully I have many more good years to hunt with Daisy and Junie, and many more trips with my old and new hunting buddies. And I'll be praying that my father and uncle can recover from the health issues that kept them out of the field this year.

Here's to next year!

Wow. Best of the year? Had to be the Brown County rooster I bagged on the way back after three hours of searching and puttering. He was like a reward for putting in the time and effort -- like the pheasant gods put a rooster in the grass to give the dogs something to get excited over.

As for the old dogs. Yep. I am there. Daisy started with tremors in her rear quarters last month and now I'm worried about her days busting cats and grass. Guess we'll wait and see.

Puppy and 11 lbs cabercalie, first bird on his career!

A good season and will continue 2 months:)

This was my first year Pheasant hunting. The best part of it for me was my first bird and hunting with my 6 year old. He's hooked now. We got 5 total this year. I got 2 alone and 3 with him. They're all wma state stocked nj birds, but we'll take 'em for now. I can't wait to see him shoot his first bird.

I had exactly the same experience several years ago with my then new dog. It's a "Eureka!" moment.

There are gentlemen in this forum?? ;)

From reading the above post it never ceases to amaze me how much hunters love hunting or their dogs. Our UGUIDE pheasant camp owners are also always amazed at the phenomena.

I nor a lot of native South Dakotan's never grew up with that "sector" of the sport but I am glad to have been exposed to it and that it exists.

Here is my memory that came to top of mind. It was at our West River camp and was with good friends and family. One of the guys in the group was the guy who first took me and my dad pheasant hunting in Iowa when I was 17.

It was nice to return favor and take him to a camp the like of which neither of us had experienced in the 15 years we hunted Iowa together.

We were on a 3 day hunt in late december and we have been having a tough go of getting into some birds. We decide to to the "surround the shelterbelt by the farmers house" tactic. This is wierd because this place you can park your car right by the house within 100 yards of where these birds would be if they were in the belt. talking, loading guns, yelling at dogs, slamming doors.

We ended up making loose plan and leaving dogs in the car of all things. Took about 5 minutes to get around this thing and when we did after the first shot rang out it was WWIII. 15 minutes later there was 24 birds on the ground and you have never seen more excited faces and smiles on guys that range from 12 years old on up to in their 60's.

We did have plenty of field and dog work the next 2 days but that turkey shoot is one of those once in a lifetime type deals that you just don't come across every year. Guys could only keep one shell in their gun because as soon as they would jack a shell in there would be another rooster flying overhead.

As you can see from the pic the trees were covered in frost like flocked Christmas trees and the bold color of late season roosters was brilliant set against this backdrop.

That's my sons 3 year old black lab Bailey in from of the birds. I have trained her on birds since she was year old since the kid is in college.

1st pic just me and a good freind out in SD 4 birds up 4 birds down. The dog work was great to watch. This year my dog realy came into her own.

2nd pic was me and 2 good freinds. After having a hard go of it we made a call and headed to a spot that Jeff was nice enough to share with us. 2 hours later we had 9 birds.

3rd pic took a freind out who had not shot a rooster in a while. Georgia worked her a$$ of that day pointed 1 big rooster that my budy shot and with 15min left in the day we both tag teamed the 2nd bird. Great day that I will never forget.

This year was a :10sign: in my book. Added another pup to the mix for next year cant wait for 2012 season to start.

TBear, that first picture is way cool. how was it made?

I have a filter setting on my camera that lets me pic what colors I want to show threw. The nice thing is I can take the pic and edit the filter setting later. Here is one that enhanced the reds on.

Tbear, You can post pics like that anytime. Very cool!:)

I think the best part of 011 season was. Even after the worst possible weather conditions across the North Country. Record snow depths, prolonged sub zero and months between thaws. Then the wet cold Spring. Pheasants survived, not the numbers by anymeans. Where I hunted opening week it was about 5 miles per rooster flush. But what the heck:) makes the rewards sweeter.

And my 2 year old pup was amazing!

I have two favorite memories from this year. Opening week I was able to hunt with my father and uncle (also my godfather) in SD. As they are both getting up there in age, I really try to cherish everytime I get to hunt with them. The second is I took my 9 yr old son on his first "hunting trip" to SD before X-mas. Just him and I and the dog on the long journey to meet my cousin. While he was highly disappointed that there was no snow to be found, he seemed very excited about seeing me kill roosters. He can't wait to get his own gun and start shooting birds. Another great season in my books.
