Worst Season Ever

After reading that I'm not the only one with trouble this year I feel much better. Missery loves company as they say. I for one have put the gun up for the rest of the year and dedicated myself to projects around the house and drinking beer. Well I might reconsider and give it one more go this weekend or next. Or maybe both weekends.

Nick

I'm sad to say that I have only made it out one weekend this season. It was the second weekend of the season. Saw and harvested quite a few birds and witnessed some good dog work, but it was a larger group than I like to hunt with. My dad hasn't been out at all (for the first time in over 35 years). My grandma (his mom) passed away the Monday after Thanksgiving and I just don't think his heart was in it.

From all of the reports, I guess we picked a good year not to be out much, but I still miss it. Maybe we can catch some crappie this spring and regroup for next year. I have enjoyed the stories and pictures posted on this forum. At least a chance to live vicariously through those of you who have been afield. Good luck and be safe to those who still have some trips planned for the end of the season.

Sorry to hear about your grandma Nick.

My season was very much the same. This is the first year of my life I didn't hunt w/ dad in KS, though he did go to SD w/ me. I too have lived this KS season through the eyes, pictures, and stories of others on this board. And for that, I THANK ALL OF YOU who were willing to share:cheers:

I made it out west for my second hunt this past weekend, and it was miserable. We were in the hoisington area, and did really well opening weekend. Took two newbies out with me, and between the three of us and my gsp we got 10 over two days, which was good. And they had a great time. The same two were begging to go again, and i usually try to go mid january, so we set up a trip and actually had 3 more newbies, and three of my old stand by's join us. Hunted all day Friday, all day Saturday, and Sunday morning. In all we had three roosters within shooting distance, and dropped one. None ever close to me, mind you. Saw probably 30 hens. walked the EXACT same spots as opening weekend, plus toss in a few WIHA spots by lacrosse. And it nothing seemed to work. I hate to think of the new ones who went back to work monday to tell their coworkers they had a group of nine and shot one stinkin rooster. Hope they don't give up on it.

Even my GSP was giving me the slanted eye come sunday noonish.... Like what gives? Oh well. Still beat work. Good conversations, good food. Always next year. Good luck to you all.

There is no question that this has been my worst season in years maybe ever.

But finally today I got a bird shot over my pup Indy. I generally try to keep a pup in quail their first season, but since I couldn't get into them, I took him after some pheasants today.

I shot 2 over his pointes today, but being greedy I lost the 2nd one, when I went to flush what turned out to be a hen being pointed by other dog.

Indy my pup is next to his rooster

This was not a point on a bird (mouse at the end of the day ) , but it was the only pic of a point I got today. Ace backing on the right.

It's been a Jekyl and Hyde year! When I got on private ground limits came early. Hunting public or WIHA, I had as many total blanks as I had limits of private. The dogs did well though I have so far failed to get any of the 3 pups on point. Had a quality hunt set up today and was too sick to go. If I'd spent as much time hunting as I did visiting doctors, I'd feel a lot better about it. 2011/2012 will not be remembered fondly by me. I'm looking forward for spring litters and the coming fall. Some time on Johnny house birds with the pups may keep my hope for them alive.

I bet I know that field:eek:

If you do, keep it to yourself, its the only place I have found many birds in the last couple weeks :D

Troy, sorry to hear you are under the weather. Its pretty hot today so it may not have been the greatest day to hunt.

Getting the pups on a bird is tough when there aren't many around, and if the older dogs are down they tend to find them first. That one of the reasons I didn't hunt Indy with Ace till I got him into birds on his own.

We have got another weekend left. I plan to get out a couple more times.
