Working the pup ... and quail got in the way

I took Tucker down to the farm last night to take advantage of the less than 100+F temps. Indy once again had cut himself running over the weekend and is out of action with staples.

I put Tuck on a CC and couple of pigeons in launchers. He is doing real well for a 10 month old.

Then I turned him loose for a run. He found a couple of wild quail. I was pretty happy with him. Stood his birds and let me flush, and finding those quail in that tall green grass, shows a strong nose.

I have been doing a fair amount of habitat work. Been doing prescribed burns of 1/3 of the pasture a year, tree removal, some covey headquarters, a pollinator plot, and a 30' milo buffer around the crop fields.

I would guess that I am hearing twice as many quail whistling this year as compared to last season.

Nice looking pup...i have been trying to work with my 8 month old puppy on point and hold. This dang heat makes it really tough. We resorted to hiding some birds in the bushes in the back yard and then she actually pointed a wild quail that was in my neighbors yard. Was a pretty proud moment even though to was not a really pretty point it was still a point when we were not actually training.

Thanks guys, I really like him. Shorter range than I am used to at least to this point. But has a really nice nose, a natural backer and retriever.

Troy, we will be getting a bunch more of the hedge trees and cedars out of the pasture this summer. Then I think I am going to fix the fences and put a light load of cattle on it next spring. I need something thinning out the grass some.

Those quail should have had broken wings.

I seen one quail with a broken wing. It was in August in a wet year like this. The dogs went after momma quail. I almost started after them to help the quail when it dawned on me to look down. Little baby quail. Tiny. It was so cool.

How many of you have seen a quail with a broken wing?

I have never seen a quail with a broken wing, other than ones I shot.

I have not seen any quail broods yet, but I am seeing plenty of pairs.

I have been seeing pairs. What does that mean? They are in a period of renesting? Laying one egg per day for a couple weeks followed by 3 weeks of incubation?

A month of non-heavy rainfall and we might be in good shape. Good carryover from last year really helps.

Pairing up of quail is the beginning of the breeding season.
I have not seen any quail brood yet. And if some of the rain killed some nests there is plenty of time for them to re-nest.
