Wildlife costs money

The other morning, I went out to the shop to plug in my tractor so I could feed cows. When I got there, I was greeted by a tire with an antler stuck in it. Fortunately, it was a front tire. I enjoy wildlife so I know this is going to happen, I just wish it wouldn't happen when it is so cold. But the good news is wildlife also helps pay for things. Our normal hunt is a package deal that includes housing. After Thanksgiving we don't house hunters, but we take smaller groups and we negotiate the price.
So early in the season I had a guy call and ask about hunting later and wanted to know what I would charge. I told him make me an offer and I would tell him if it was too low and I would tell him if it was too high. So, when he showed up, he asked what I charged. I told to him to make He offered $250 each. I told him that was too much, so we negotiated it lower.
Awhile latter I was at the local grocery store and came across four guys in camo. I asked what they were hunting. They said pheasants. So, I asked them how they were doing. They were not overly enthused. So, after I paid for my groceries, I told them they should follow me home and I would give them one place to hunt for free. When we got to where I wanted them to hunt and I was explaining it to them, one of the guys asked if they could give me something. I told them it was ok for me to be generous once in a while. One of the guys said he didn't feel right not giving me something. So, I told him if it was going to ruin his day, he could give me something. They gave me more than I thought they should, so I told them where else they could hunt. Then a little later a guy that used to hunt here showed up wanting to hunt. I told him where to hunt, and he hunted for two days and left too much money in my mailbox. So, I guess the wildlife has paid for the new tire. It is nice to meet hunters that appreciate hunting wild pheasants.

I know this is a sore subject on here more and more but I certainly have my own thoughts. You could farm every inch of your land and bale the rest. Hunting for money would never be an issue because nobody would want to hunt your property. You then would be criticized for leaving nothing for the wildlife and being greedy. Personally I prefer you do what you do because even if I never hunt your property it makes the surrounding property better.

I have worked in the construction/ remodeling industry my entire life. I know a lot of tradesmen here and I am known by a lot of people. I don’t ask for brother in law deals and I really don’t offer them. My wife and I are in the process of renovating our home for the last time. I had a friend over that I have known a long time that is a tile setter. He is a small operator and does good work. He never charges enough and is always broke and nursing an old truck around. I have always told him that you have to take care to cover your expenses because nobody else will. Customers take advantage of his good nature every day. I always pay him what he’s worth.

Having enough allows you to be easily generous! (although, i do know some very generous people with limited resources)
But, you have enough because you husbanded your resources.
Pheasants and pheasant ground are a limited resource that need to be actively managed
Often, appreciation is payment enough.
