My wife wants me to get a hunting poodle. I have never seen one in the fields but she show me info on them and I be damn they do hunt. I think people would laugh at me when I am in the field with my baby brittany and her hunting poodle. :D

What do you guys think? Should I try a hunting poodle as my second hunting dog?

She says they are one of the smartest dog. Just below a border collie in brains.
I just can't imagine walking out into the fields with the poodle.

I believe there is a provision in the repeal of the "don't ask don't tell law" that now also you to openly hunt with a poodle.:D

My wife could promise anything. But I just could not bring myself to go hunting with one of them.........Bob

its a trap!
Dont do it! She'll have it with one of the french pom pon fruity haircuts and shaved plums!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Go for it

If the dog had hunting instinct and can be adequately trained, who cares what breed it is. If it's not running wild flushing birds out of range and I don't have to listen to you yelling at it all day, I don't care if it has pink ribbons in it's hair, I'll hunt with you. But, if you do end up bringing it out and it's got the foo foo hair cut, etc., be ready to accept your share of good nature'd ribbing.

I agree with Buck.

Is that a Dogtra 2500T&B collar on your dog?

Not sure. One of my 2009 pups that is owned by Charley Paylor in Montivideo MN. I was helping him train for NAVHDA Natural Ability test. Nice pup at 13 months. Prize I 11O and cemented a second Breeder's Award for Mazzie, aka Featherfoot's Hurricane Holly.

The second Pic is Tuka-Zoe, who I will breed with in April. He achieved NAVHDA Versitile Champion status Sept. 2010.

poodles are water retrievers for the most part. I wouldn't touch one for pheasant hunting. maybe you can pull the Pudelpointer over on her?

My wife grew up with poodles and had been against another dog but I got her to OK a Pudelpointer as a hunting/house dog. She wants something that's calmer in the house than my Vizsla and the Weim I used to have. Each of those dogs really didn't settle down for 6-7 yrs and the Vizsla not even now at 8.5yrs.

Go for an Irish Water Spaniel. Looks like a poodle, flushes like a spaniel. has an independent streak like a cat, perfect for the wife. Works water and field when it decides to! Good Luck.

find a good hunting kennel

If you decide to get the poodle just make sure you get one from a kennel that hunts with the dogs. I have found in most breeds you have show breeding and hunting kennels. Many of the show dogs are not so great in the field. Notice I didn't say all.

I have seen a few poodles locally. I wasn't impressed.

Depends on the Vizsla. My 4 year old and 7 month old are very calm at home, but hunt like crazy in the field.
