Whooping Crane

I have always wondered what someone else would get taken away from them if they were not or did not hunt and fish? He lost his right to hunt, fish and trap for 2 years! What if he wasn't a fisherman, Trapper or Hunter?? Just a thought I have when I see crimes involving Wildlife!! Anyone have any idea?

So . . . there's been some for, some against, and some suggesting community service, some offering "other" offenses to temper the senselessness of the perp's act.

To those against the punishment: What would you folks suggest be appropriate punishment? The guy deliberately targeted & KILLED an extremely-rare endangered species (use what you hunt.). I'll agree with the fine, or SO much community service, vigorously-enforced to the point that the guy RUNS from endangered species in the future.

Should the after-the-fact action be:
1) A marksmanship award?
2) Forgiveness?
3) A stern scolding?
4) A meal of moldy corn?
4) A recipe for poached Whooping Crane?

With choices, especially STUPID choices come consequences. The WORST part, is that others will classify him as a "HUNTER" . . . and because of this alone, ALL legitimate hunters should view this jerk with the greatest of disdain.

$85,000 to a small town rural person. Is a amount equal to what some may pay for a home. A home that would take 30 years of working to pay for. He's a 26 years old. Lots of young people make mistakes. Do we condemn them to a life of the poor for their mistake? Some best read the bible about forgiveness. It seems to me some here are on a constant hunt for revenge. I for one have no yen to live in a country that looks for more and more harsh punishment for it's people. When we already incarcerate more then anywhere in the world. That should tell you the success rate of such a program . Eventually, we will be as Neanderthal as the countries we have liberated for doing much the same to their people.

Teach and guide someone, mentor them, show them the way will go much further then condemning them to a life of financial struggle. PETA probably has some openings for a few that support these kind of penalties for the death of a animal.

OP,

Provide a REAL option . . . "mentor" . . . THAT will teach him a lesson! Not my fault he lives in a small town, he messed-up . . . royally: so he has a family, etc. . . . he should have considered that before he pulled the trigger, said "Hey, watch this!" He made a HUGE mistake. Should he get-off with an "I'm sorry?" You complain, argue, blame other entities, but you didn't offer an option as to appropriate punishment. Would you feel differently if he eradicateted the majority of the Pheasant population in your area with a rifle, out-of-season, illegally? As I said in my first post: Crimes in this country are NOT punished with enough severity to coerce the perps to "think twice" before they err again. Hence the reason gun crimes, gun-control pursuit, and other crimes continiue. You're either part of the solution or you're part of the problem. Man-up or quit blaming others. We reap what we sow.

All this liberal bs really gets old, and calling this prick a hunter is a slap in the face of every hunter out there. 85 grr is about right. If he can't pay that put his ass in public service restoring habitat for the cranes. Liberal, conservative and where a judge is from has nothing to do with this.Oh yeah Clinton was a duck hunter in Arkansas.

Guys I think you can clean up the language. This is not a acceptable thing per the rules of this site. Everybody has their own views. A little respect would go a long way.

We'll agree to disagrree, OP. But you have yet to provide your perception of an "appropriate punishment" for the crime commited (and it WAS a crime.). As for Messedup . . . he did. Infer ***as you will, but it is what it is. If that offended you, I apologize.

Peace. I rest my case/debate.

Maybe have him spend the next 5 years speaking at various engagements. Like sport shows, Pheasant fest, waterfowl symposium's, Deer Hunters assoc, DNR booth at the state fair Etc..educating others against doing what he done. That's what U.S. fish and game did to several known waterfowl poachers in the south. Like Phil Robertson and Patrick Pitt to name a couple. They had that choice or being prosecuted. Look where Phil Robertson is today. He's a Christian church going productive member of society. Instead of a felon.

That works for me, OP. Making one realize that there is a price to pay for actions taken is a good thing. What you have suggested serves that purpose & "should" make him think before he would repeat a similar act.

One thing is he used a rifle, not a shotgun. The intent is obvious, since you cannot shoot geese, swans, cranes or ducks with a rifle legally. He knew he was wrong. He deliberately when out to do harm. As far as a fine? We probably spent more than $85000.00 per each bird annually. Only got a 2 year suspended hunting lisence sentence, no jail time. Lots of other crimes go un-noticed, and unprosicuted. If you a big fish who do great damage it is easier, If you a single individual who gets caught, Katy bar the door! I have little sympathy for this guy.
I agree. I'd just like to see one and what did he accomplish in his own mind to justify the act? Can't hardly brag abiut it or did he?
