I'll be out Satuday with the pointer. Then Sunday, if I happen across some waterfowl I'll be out with the lab so she can do her thing. If not, then back out with the pointer AND lab on Sunday for more walking!

It's hunting season! The one time of year we ALL look forward too. Bad reports, good reports be damned, I'm getting out!

Can't wait for the weekend!

Heading out Sat. mornin to Ks. Gonna hunt for a week and wear these dogs out. Thinking about taking a couple of the 12 week old pups along and put them on the ground when we get done with a section. Give them some exposure. Don't expect much from them at this age. Could be a good experience. My only concern is how much time they will be confined to the trailer.

Bird hunting a couple hours from home this weekend with a fellow UPH'r. Hoping to make a new friend(s) and see some new places:thumbsup:

Hunting friday and saturday in a new-to-me area of the state. Just me, one other guy, and 3-4 dogs. The original plan was to hunt sunday too, but we're going to wait and see if we do any good. I think we'll be coming home Saturday night.

I have one set of spots I haven't hunted yet. If this trip is a bust and those spots are a bust, I'll probably hang it up for the year as far as pheasants are concerned.

There's a few other spots close to town that always hold some quail. I'll likely go there a time or two just for the dog and my son.

I might have to dig out the waders and the duck decoys...

I'll be out and about, that's for sure. Goal is to get thirty days of dogs on the ground.... We'll see.

I'll most likely be taking my pups with me as well. Although, they do have a sweet set up in the garage! They go twice a day on field walks, then when the kids get home from school they are in the house rough housing! Last night they somehow took off the decorative knobs on the potato bin, still haven't figured out how they did that! Have to figure out a crate for the back seat of the truck.

My older pointer is humming right along. Much field time before the season. He runs like a banshee now, smooth as a well tuned 350 chevy engine!

I will be passing on this weekend. Ate all the dust last weekend that I can handle for awhile. Besides, I actually like to pull the trigger from time to time when I bird hunt. But that's just me.

I got to tell you guys, I always bring the pups! I took whole litter of 16 week old pups. I hunted a 160@ of old reedy grass CRP. 8 pups surrounded and pointed and or flush roosters, like I would not have believed! It was the dog phenomina, birds could not run back through the line, where ever they ran saw a nother dog, can't keep track by hearing them, pups surrounded 5 roosters and held. Best hunt I had that year, more pheasants than I ever saw in that 1/4 before, and that was after a party hunted it that morning! Got up 15 rooster and lord knows how many hens, in a part of Kansas where there aren't that many! Absolutely, bring the pups! With pheasants they function as great blockers, and they don't hog the shots.

Well, my plans just changed. The wife of my hunting partner just called to say that he broke his leg in a car accident on the way to work this morning. Thankfully no one's injuries were life threatening.

I suppose if you're going to miss a bird season with a broken leg, this would be the season to miss.

Sorry, but this reminded me of a year we had to wheel my old man out to the fields to block. A side of beef fell on his leg at work and he was hell-bent on making the opener. So, being the youngest in the group I was given the responsibility of wheeling him into blocking position at each field. Get your buddy a wheel-chair and take him anyway:rolleyes::D

In all seriousness, I'm glad it was "only" a broken leg!

Good luck to everyone going out this weekend. I just got back from 3 days of hunting and it was the most miserable hunt I have ever been on. Never hunted in a dust bowl before but now I can say I did and hope I never do again.

Like many others here, I'll be sitting this weekend out as well. I don't mind an occasional long walk with no birds....but I still want to at least feel like there might be a bird up ahead.

The main reason I'll be hunting at all this year is to get my dogs out. Our dogs only have a few years on this earth to do what their bred to do. I don't know how much the average hunter gets out in a year, but let's say it's 10 days. Further, lets say that a dog has an average life of 10 hunting seasons. That means that he's only going to be out 100 days! How sad! I've been lucky enough to average 40 days afield or so. This year will bring down that average.

The lack of birds and the 50 & 60 degree temps forecast for this weekend are going keep me at home. Low bird numbers will to cause me to curtail my hunting this year.

If I could blink my eyes (make that click my heels together three times) and be anywhere in the state, I'm not sure where I'd go. It's that bad.

Point!

Im only planning on deer scouting. Bird hunting has taken a complete back seat to deer season. Never been able to say that before. Dont plan on intentionally going after birds until right before Christmas.

I cant believe Im saying this but I may even pay for a preserve hunt for the dogs. (One is 12 and aging waaayyy too fast) Want to enjoy one last good day with her. Never thought Id have to pay to see birds.

That would of been a sight!!! Did you happen to take a pic?? I would of been scared of keeping them all under control!!! Dogs are better then friends anyway, they don't whine nearly as much!!! Great story!:10sign:

Thats what we are talking about, just to get the dogs into birds again.

I want to say that I am still debating, but I am just kidding myself. I will end up out west again trying to get Molly on a rooster. Wish it would cool off and either rain or snow.
