Ultimate Pheasant Hunting

Intro

Hello, my name is Mark Calderwood. I've been an avid pheasant hunter for 30 years. Always enjoy reading about everyones pheasant adventures.

My hunting buddy in the picture is Dash. Dash is a 9 month old German Shorthaired pointer who just completed his first pheasant season.

My pheasant hunting has been limited to SW Kansas (where I live now) and Cental Kansas (where I grew up).

Thanks for creating a great website and forum.

Mark

Hey Mark. Good to have you on the forum boards here at Ultimatepheasanthunting.com.

Nice to hear you representing the Kansas pheasant hunters. Looking forward to your input in the future.

Wecome Mark, How's the Winter going for Kansas Pheasants?

The winter snow has been nice. Unfortunately I live in an area which received 2 or more inches of ice on Dec 30th @ 31st before any snow fell. The ice made it tough on all livestock and birds. It broke the cover and laid it flat which really hurt the birds. Many of the January pheasants I saw had little to no tail feathers. I'm assuming they froze to the ground and yanked them out to move when the storm was over. The general population still appeared good though. Pheasants were easy to spot in the open field but the CRP hunting was non existent because of the thick ice. Our electric coop posted some good storm photo's at http://www.pioneerelectric.coop/. Now we're all just hoping for good nesting conditions so next year can be a good season also. :)

Hi, I was born in Souix City, IA. I 've hunted Pheasants around Sioux City and Jefferson, S. Dakota when I was a kid. I know live in Chicago and just got back into hunting after being away for 14 years.

I recently went to a hunt club with 5 others in Dwight, Illinois. We had a 120 mixed birds released of Quail, Chukar, and Pheasants. We ended up getting 82birds.

I'm glad to be a part of the forum.

Hey everybody! Just thought I would pop back in and say HI! Looks like a lot of people have been joining this site. I have started to tell my friends about it and look forward to more participation.

I hunt with my Shorthairs around the Midwest (like there is anywhere else to REALLY hunt pheasants!) Sorry to you coasters-I know everywhere there are birds but not the same as hunting up here.

Good luck to all in '07 and let's gang up on our legisaltors to beat the CRP out of them!

John

Any suggestions for the site, I am all ears.

My name is Jeremy and I live north of Toronto, Ontario about 4 hours east of Detroit. I have yet to hunt wild pheasants but had the oppportunity last fall to hunt in SD with a friend but couldn't go due to a trip I had planned for my grandfathers 85th birthday. I did get to hunt 3 days while I was there. Hopefully I can make it this year as the invitation is still open. We have a Pheasnts Forever chapter this has been in operation for 2 years and a few more chapters are in the works. The pheasants we have left are pretty much all in areas where we can't hunt with a gun but you can with a hawk or falcon. Hopefully in the near future we can hunt wild birds here and not released birds on public land. Here are a few pictures of my trip and my dog Beau.

Thank you, and yes they are ptarmigan, or patridge as my brother-in-law calls them. I'm hoping to get to get to SD or Iowa this fall, if everything works out, to hunt pheasants. I want to try and hunt as many different species of birds as possible over my dog.

Howdy,

I'm a new guy here. I'm a recent refugee from another pheasant forum...I won't say it's name but it's initials are PC. I just got sick of the lack of moderation and the frequent spam I encountered. I was mostly a lurker there with only occasional posts. Hopefully I'll be more active here. I also recently met one of the owners and most active members in this forum, Pheasants4ever.

I'm rapidly closing in on 60. I've hunted since I was a kid and lived most of the time in Minneapolis. I moved to Sioux Falls three and a half years ago and it's the best move I could have made. In Minneapolis I had pretty much given up hunting because it was such a hassle to get far enough out of town and get access to a place to hunt. Here in beautiful SD I can be in really good habitate in 60 minutes or less.

As I've aged I've become a lot less concerned with my bag and much more focused on the experience. When I was a young, hard charging "turk" we thought anything less than the daily limit was akin to failure. As I age and become less driven by competition I've slowed down, take it as it comes and enjoy the total experience of a good hunt. I've even gone so far recently as to hunt exclusively with muzzle loaders...everything, waterfowl, upland and deer. I enjoy it for the added historical aspect it brings to the sport and the added challenge it adds to the hunt.

My first love will always be decoyed ducks over water but upland is a close second. The last few years I've had a continuing frustration...the frailities of aging. I hate it!! I continue to make the mistake of smoking (started when I was 15) and haven't been able to stop yet. That and the extra pounds I've picked up over the years add up to a double whammy and I find myself limited in my energy and all.

But I still love it and I believe I'll really like this site.

Hi all. I've been here for a while, but have been away from the board pretty much since the end of the season last year.

I'm tuna, 17years in the military (army and air force) and I'm in Massachusetts. OK, I'll wait for the laughter to stop. The pheasant hunting here is OK, but you really have to work to get a bird or two. Nothing like the pictures that I see from the rest of you. Still, any hunting is better than nothing - and if you need advice on hunting against the odds, I'm your man.

This site has been a wealth of info for me, and I hope to see it keep expanding!

Hey tuna. I wondered what happened to you.

I'll be redoing the website soon and adding a bunch more stuff. Thanks for sticking around.

Hey Folks,

I too was on PC but found this a short time ago. I look forward to being here, and thought I would share a photo of my boy "Cutter". It was 30 degrees this morning... a sure sign it's time to get the equipment organized. Anyway I look forward to being on the site.

Take Care

Paul

Hey Paul. Good to have you on board here. I agree on getting the gear organized... I am starting to get the gear out of the rubbermaid tubs. Can't wait for another season. 3 months out of the year makes us appreciate the 1/4 of the year we can actually hunt roosters!
