Damn hell has frozen over, but I kind of agree with Goose. There is a caveat in that you should take the dog to obedience classes, if nothing else just to socialize,by having decent habits around other people and dogs. Almost any where you live there will be some hunters that get together to train. Rookies are always welcome to throw birds or do other grunt work. Just get a decent bred dog and have fun.
 
I have had three hunting dogs. The first two had me for a trainer, which means they didn't really have a trainer. The third dog was professionally trained. What a difference that made, he was absolutely a retrieving machine. He found birds in cattails and cornfields. If he saw it go down, he found it. He probably had a better nose, which I am sure made a difference.
