Title

upland of course if i had a good deer hunting spot i would like that as well but not as much as i love smoking a rooster with the dog running full blast and sliding to a solid point

I grew up in SW Arkansas in the late 50s and 60s hunting quail with my dad and uncles. If we still had a huntable population, that is about all I would want. The fact is, we do not have a huntable population and I am forced to travel a good distance out of state to hunt wild birds, quail or phez. That does not promote a happy hunter, a well rounded dog, or a fat bank account.

We do have ducks! I duck hunt most every day of the season if at all possible. It lets me hunt with a smoothbore and watch my pup work and learn. I guess that defines me as a waterfowler with an out of state sideline as a upland hunter.

I spend a lot more time upland hunting. I enjoy the Waterfowl hunting to, especially ducks. I can't sit by decoys, I got to be on the move. Most of my pheasant hunting is combined with jumping ducks. Mixed bag stuff. I hunt with Labs that love the duck retrieving as much as the upland. I have to say if not for the Labs I would not waterfowl hunt.

I can relate. There's nothing special about retrieving a downed duck or goose through knee high mud and cattails. I find my application for my lab increases 100 fold during the waterfowl opener.:D

Though I have to say, that smoked goose I had the other day may keep me over the water even without my lab:rolleyes::cheers:

I'm with Bob, living in Houston doesn't afford me the chance to do as much upland as I'd like so I hunt ducks as often as possible with 2-3 trips per year for upland. I hunted ducks (and other species) while growing up in Iowa until the upland season started, then I was full time phez.

I cant pick one over the other. I do both because it inables me to spend more time out with the dogs. I really dont think I would do either one if I didnt have the Labs. The enjoyment for me is watching the labs work, whether it is the field chasing roosters or in the marsh in the blind calling in ducks and geese. I just hope they enjoy the time with me as much as I enjoy the time with them LOL

Upland (cept in the spring). The ducks I shoot are jump shot as they present themselves while chasing upland birds. Getting into a marsh or field after careful scouting an hour before it's light to hopefully have some ducks come into range just isn't my style. More of a go after them hunter.

I would just call myself an outdoorsman. That's how I generally introduce myself, anyway. :D

I like it all, can't pick just one!
