Thinking about getting a new puppy!

Does anybody hunt with a Deutsch Drahthaar or a Chesapeke Bay Retreiver?
I can't make up my mind between these two. Thanks

If your looking at doing alot of duck hunting I would go for the Chesapeke Bay Retreiver. What I have seen of them get water dogs. Not so good on land. The Drahthaar maybe a better choice for a little of water and land hunting. Let us know what you decide.

I think you should first decide whether you want a pointing dog or a retriever. Then pick which breed in those groups would suit you best. I'm sure pheasants can be hunted successfully with either type.

Golden I have to disagree, I hunted with Chessies for 20 years both upland and duck if trained correctly like any other dog they make great upland hunters. They have great drive and are tireless workers, and at the end of the day thier coats are a little easier to clean than some wire coats.

Mil-Vet Natty has a good point, I would also like to add find out what type of personality you want in your in house, Chessie's have a strong personality and need a stronger personality in the household.

Like was said earlier, the biggest point is do you want a retriever or a pointer? I'm still torn. I'm thinking retriever/flusher, but the drahthaar has me still interested in it for a reason I have no good explanation for.

also you might want to think about Pudel Pointers, but I do like the Deutsch Drahthaar

sorry mil vet

the guy asked about a drahthaar and a chesapeke didnt ask about a gsp once again the 2percent on here show there true selves

interesting choices, as there is a huge difference between a DD and a Chessie, i think i would want to know a lot more about his bird hunting preferences.

Thanks for all advice guys. I just want a good solid dog that loves to hunt upland and waterfowl birds. Not interested in field test don't have time for that stuff. We already have a Lab, but the girlfriend won't let me hunt him for some reason. She thinks he might hurt:confused::confused:! I like the chessie because of its all or nothing attitude! As for the drahthaar I'm not gonna lie, I'm diggin' the Mustache. Once again thanks guys!

So I was wondering?
Is a Drahthaar A line of Wirehair pointer?
Like a Elhew pointer is to English Pointer? I'm not trying to steal your thread just looking for info.

From what I know and have read the Drahtharr and GWP are essentially the same dog. Or at least once were the same dog. The Drahthaar has a separate registry in Europe while the GWP is registered with the AKC. The Drahthaar breeding is much more regulated and restricted and they are required to go through significantly more testing, both health and hunting. Thus people feel that they are now two distinct breeds.
