A guy I know was deer hunting up in Wasington county over the weekend. Told me he saw and heard a few birds on some ground he has acess to. Buddy and I went up and managed a couple in some CRP grass waterways through cut beans. Pushed several hens and two small coveys of quail ( no i did not shoot any).

Very Cool! I kicked up several covey's last week in NE KS while deer hunting. Marked them and going back after this weekend to see what we can find.

Yep the do allow rifle deer around perry on the public ground. It will be a pumpkin patch!!!!! a couple of walkin's don;t allow it so it may be a good time to hit them. I am heading that way shortly with the boy to hunt deer out of heated box blinds:D Hope someone hunting on the public by us pressures them into our setup.

Good luck all and be safe.

Went this weekend around Marysville and Beattie and didn't see a single bird. Not a pheasant or quail. Hunted most of the day on Friday and couldn't find anything. Not even a turkey.

I too hunted that area this weekend. We busted one covey of about 6 birds. Hunted a little in Nemaha county also. Sad up there. You used to be able to go up and at least see a few pheasants and quail. There was a time a had a couple of little honey holes in Valley Falls Ks. Also would shoot pheasants in Hiawatha. I don't get it, I passed some nice habitat driving around. Stopped and asked permission at a couple places, farmers were nice but said not to waste my time.

Yep, I have not seen a rooster in Jefferson County in years. I have access to farms that are managed for hunting and still aren't seeing the numbers like we used too. I hunt up there a lot for 20 yrs and I have seen a couple of covey's when deer hunting this year. I did see a Redtail Hawk from my deer stand dive for a Hen but it missed.

Im confused on how you guys cant even find quail? I hunted SW of Seneca 2 weeks ago with my dad and we got into 4 coveys and shot 2 roosters. Saw about 2 dozen pheasants as well. I hunted south of Axtell around the first of the season and ran into a lot of birds there too. Not sure why you guys arent finding any birds but this year has been great for quail in the NE

Put a few hours in around this area today. Saw 5 hens and 2 roosters. Neither rooster flushed in range. Didn't see any quail. Dogs were happy to be out and so was I. Doesn't take too long to get there either:thumbsup:

I'll spend the rest of my vacation chasing the few coveys I've found around here this year. It's not worth driving to NW KS to hunt pheasants in the temperatures the forecast is calling for.

maybe we are just crappy hunters:D

ha sorry I didnt mean anyone was a bad hunter but I just keep getting so many mixed reports of people doing bad/good. Just confused on where they are and arent.

i know. i'm just screwin with ya. I haven't been up too many times this year, and didn't hunt too hard monday. I did see a few birds but it was pretty warm.

i guess birds are just kinda spotty in the area. ive seen a few quail around valley falls this year, better than years past. saw a couple coveys sunday morning, drove 5 miles to where i found a covey last year, with great habitat this year, walked every inch of it and the dog didnt even get birdy once.

This has been my experience around here this season. I was starting to think something was wrong with my dog, but she performed flawlessly on our trip out West. At this point, I'm just running the dogs as opposed to hunting.

If there's an upside to the poor bird numbers, it might be that Daisy is in the best physical condition she's ever been in since I owned her. She's built like a freaking cheetah! MUCH more graceful than she was in September. That first trip out to the bird farm, her butt/back fat was doing the truffle-shuffle as she chugged her way through the field.

Anyway, it's been a really unproductive season for my crew, but I am excited for the pup's future. Hopefully this is a good Spring/Summer for the quail and chickens.

I did see two enormous flocks of chickens the other day. The first one had over 30 chickens (I counted them) flying from feed to roost, and the second flock was even bigger than the first.

Toad,

Pattern them birds and kill'em. I have never shot one and it is on my bucket list.

I cant speak for northeast Kansas, but east central has the best quail hunting we have had in years. I'm leaving for sw Kansas to hunt pheasants for 5 days, and this is the first time in a long time I kinda hate to leave. I've shot more quail in the last 2 weeks than I have the last 5 years. Hopefully we will have another good hatch this spring, and then things will be getting back to the old days next year. My dad, brother and I all went hunting yesterday seperately with our dogs, and we all limited out by noon.
