Thanksgiving w/e reports

I know many of you made it out over the Thanksgiving w/e. How was the hunting? I know it was windy, but surely someone has something to share w/ those of us that weren't fortunate enough to make it out.

I hunted 2 days (2 hrs each day around home) in SEK, pushed up 2 coveys of quail. Been windy, tough for pups to get scent but still fun nonetheless. Just got to work on the young pup to steady up on coveys, she gets nervous and bumps.

Thanksgiving w/e report

Nephew and I hunted 2 hours on Saturday Morning , east of Reno county line . Very windy followed English Pointer and let him do the hunting . Pointed and flushed 5 hens along the hunt . Last 200 yards heading back ,dog gets real birdy tracking thru cattails quick point and flush . ROOSTER ! I fired 3 shots he Dead now ! Dog made a good retrieve and 1 in the bag . Great way to end the hunt, will try to get picture on later .

My buddy and I hunted Friday afternoon, Saturday, and Sunday morning South of Cawker. The wind was unreal Saturday, everything on my body was covered in dirt from the blowing dust. Early we found bird in grass and managed to shoot 2 roosters. We also missed a few, shooting in 40-50 MPH wind is a bear. We never found many birds the rest of the day I dont think they were in milo in all of that wind. We did get up one covey of quail but it was pretty small and we didnt shoot any. Sunday was a better day as far as the wind goes, we only hunted about 2 and a half hours. I think the wind wore us out the day before. We managed to shoot 3 roosters Sunday morning. It was a tough weekend, but still nice to get out.

Headed out with my hunting partners on Saturday. Ran into light snow and icy roads outside of Goodland. Hunted in hurricane strength winds and manged to bring three birds to the bag between us. Some birds held tight and others flushed wild even when we were hunting into the wind. Ate dirt all day but had a great day overall. Dog flushed a bunch of hens and we had fun playing crazy Ivan with birds in a heavy tree break with the birds either flying back into the break or just darting in and out. Every effort proved fruitless and hilarious. We tried everything but the birds just would not cooperate.......
Question though.... All the rooster we have knocked down have had some spurs on them. I have only killed one bird with nubs. This kind of tells me there wasn't a good spring hatch. Anybody notice the same?????

I am definately seeing a lot more mature birds vs young birds. One farmer we hunt on said that there was a really late hatch. I don't feel like we have really seen any super young birds.

No pheasant or quail this weekend. Did go on a 2 day duck safari. Nothing much flying on saturday, but with the front a lot of ducks on sunday. Managed to get two nice groups of green heads into the dekes on Sunday. Nothing better than watching a group of 20 Mallards cupping and quacking all the way in. Headed out to Nw kansas for a hunt next weekend. Then back to South Dakota the weekend after. By then my wife will probably ground me till after Christmas, then I will hit it hard a couple more times.

Same thing, I talked to my wifes family in Liberal before opening weekend. He was seeing LITTLE pheasant chicks cutting milo. Hunted close to home wednesday. Let a nice covey fly. Pushed a group of pheasants into a corner on some grazed crp; unfortanetly the dog was quicker than me.:)

Hunted hard all day on Friday west of Washington and Linn area. Shot one Rooster and three quail in an all day hunt. Very few birds for the ground we hunted. Good thing the Cats are on a roll so I have something to look forward to this year.

Had a good Sunday.

7 Roosters, and a kicker Quail. Pretty sure there were only 3 birds in this covey..... I'm Kyle and I'm a terrible person.

A terrible person that gets :coolpics: at the end of each hunt. Congrats on the success:cheers:

lol, hell when I'm done hunting I'll spend 30 mins trying to find the right spot to take a picture.. sure beats an old tailgate pic.

We all know you do that so we can't figure out where you are hunting by the background in the picture. You should use road signs with like the crucial parts blacked out just to Phuck with the phishers:D

Started this a little late, as the shawdows kinda screwed up the pics. Didn't realize it was that bad when I was taking them.

Walked two of my cousin's 80s of corn stalks in NC on Friday, flushing two quail coveys with two going in the bag. Saturday was able to remain upright in the face of gusts up to 55 mph in NW. Didn't really venture out much and just saw birds fling away. More birdwatching than hunting. Got a snootful of dust too but had a dust-cutting bourbon on hand for the emergency. ;) Sunday was beautiful in NW. :p Put two pheasants in the bag out of four quality opportunities -- gun operator error, you know. :(
