Thanksgiving w/e reports

Most roosters that I have shot are survivors from last year. Birds from this year's hatch by Colby aren't even full sized yet. I wonder if this year's late hatch will be identifiable as roosters by mid January.

Started this a little late, as the shawdows kinda screwed up the pics. Didn't realize it was that bad when I was taking them.

Got you dailed in now!

Super nice pic! How do you get your Lab to get up there? My Lab would look at me like I'm nutz if I told her to load up on a bale:D

Kick'em up!
Be safe rifle season opens this week for deer!
Gonna paint my truck blaze orange tomorrow:eek:

Thanksgiving Weekend

Finally got a chance to head to Kansas for first time. My dad and I hunted Wed. - Sat. in NC Kansas. We hunted only WIHA. I found out that what others have said about 95% of these areas being void of habitat is true. Most were overgrazed or recently baled. Nevertheless with miles and boot leather we were able to find some habitat and therefore some birds. We had many hen flushes and some wild flushes on Wed. and Thurs. morning. We were able to connect on a rooster at day's end on Thurs. We were very excited till we had a flat tire on the road back to our lodging. Friday yielded a new "used" tire and a couple hen flushes. Sat. in the 40+ mph wind my vizsla tracked some birds very well through tall grasses and we were able to end our trip with one more rooster. We head a great trip, saw alot of country, met some great Kansans, and were lucky enough to get a couple birds. Pretty good for a couple guys and 1 dog. Birds weren't plentiful, but then again I am from IL and anything beats here.

Went up north wed hunted KS and Neb both saw 3 coveys and 7 pheasants in 7 fields. Dad and I managed to get 7 quail and 2 pheasants. Pretty tough hunting, going to be a long year that direction. Went west sat and finally had a good quail hunt saw 5 coveys by noon and got a limit of quail. Walked 3 more fields for pheasant and saw only one rooster which I got. Saw 2 more coveys of quail almost fainted! Its real spotty but there are birds to be found if you want to take the time and do the work. Happy hunting The first snow will be a great day to hunt as always is.

It was ...breezy... Saturday wasn't it...
Four of us harvested 4 roosters around Hugoton. Only one of 10 total for the weekend appeared to be "this years" bird.

Friday we went duck hunting, wind was at least 50mph, we did get 4 limits but the wind wraped my 10x10 wire welded kennel around my wifes new Sienna doing 5000 in damage, but my 10 year old son shot 7 mallards so it was worth it.:D

Gotta love the pacific flyway limits...

Had a group of seven and we hunted Northwest Kansas for three a half days. Got seven Friday, one the second day (in 30mph wind), four and some quail on third day, and knocked down three and some quail on the fourth half day. Had some kids and some inexperienced hunters and missed more than that each day. Definitely tougher hunting than I expected. Hunted mostly private but did get one rooster and a covey of quail on WIHA (corn stalks). We hunted on about 16,000 acres of private land across four land owners in three counties, focusing on wheat stubble and weedy corn stalks, but some waterways and CRP. Got good dog work, especially on hens and quail. Few pics attached.

Trailed some pheasants for 150 yards in WIHA, never got anything off the ground

This one cost me trying to get a picture of my little pointer, rooster flushed and had my camera out and had to set it down, shot at it too far because I was mad, then two roosters jumped up within 20 yards of me and my gun was empty -- then I was really mad

We have killed one rooster the first weekend that did not have fully formed tail feathers and another thxgiving weekend the same way. I suspect they nested again after losing the first hatch to hail.

hate it when they get away while getting a great photo, but that photo will last you until next season...nice.

That's one helluva first post! Welcome to the site:cheers:

Excellent pics of some dogs that look like they know what they're doing.

Great pictures!! You have some good looking dogs that seem to know what they are about. Thanks for sharing!

Hunted Friday, Saturday, and Sunday in N.W. Kansas. Same as everyone else it sounds like. Dry, windy and tons of miles on the boots! We did manage to scratch out a few roosters hunting walk in ground. We moved to Beloit on Sunday to hunt private ground. Beautiful day! Moved 2 coveys and 3 roosters. My GSP tore a whole in her side that took 25 staples to close. Thank goodness for country vets! Other than that it was a great weekend. The highlight came when the landowners 12 year old Grandson was allowed to walk with us on his first Pheasant hunt. He dropped his first rooster with his single shot, full choke 410! My dog retrieved it and that young man and his Grandpa were proud as punch. Great trip for sure. One I won't forget.

Great pic's and thanks for sharing! Had to do a double take on that pic with the Mostly Liver GSP!!! Looks very much like my GSP Chief!!:coolpics::coolpics::10sign::cheers:

X2! Fantastic post and pics! Oh, and :welcome: to this wonderful site!

FWIW, I like the pic of your pup. Too bad it wasn't a point on a hen, but hey, it's still a great pic.
