Susquehanna Valley Youth Hunt

Today the Susquehanna Valley Chapter of PF held it's annual youth hunt at Central Penn Sporting Clays in Wellsville. We had 10 kids enjoy a day that include a breakfast of donuts and juice and a lunch. The local WCO came and talked to the hunters and was available to answer any questions. He talked a little about the WPRA in the state. There was a short talk about Pheasants Forever followed by a safety review. Each kid was able to get 25 shots on some clays before breaking for lunch. After lunch it was time to hit the fields. A hunting team consisted of 2 youth hunters, 2 mentors and the dog handler. The parents were able to watch from a safe distance. Five pheasants were put in the field for the team to hunt. After those birds were hunted we took a short break and put another five birds in the field to be hunted. The group I was handling for did great. Each kid was able to get 3 birds for a total of 6 pheasants. The dogs did well finding 12 pheasants and a single quail. When we were leaving the field the dogs were on point and a covey of 15-20 quail flushed out of the woods. We were not in a position to try and shoot at them but it was a great site to see. When we got back to the club house the kids helped clean the birds. It was a great day and the weather was just as good.

Just before we were leaving to go home I heard one of the parents say he has not seen his daughter this happy for a long, long time. All the work putting this together is worth it when you hear something like that.
