State Dog

It seems like the state dog for SD is the Lab and for the state of KS it is the GSP. Based on terrain, weather, and hunter's party size are there any other factors why one dog would be more popular in certain state?

Main quarry? We hunt mostly quail here and these birds and heavy cover are made for springers.

yah i find lots of people use black labs and golden labs on central to west side of SD... but there are more and more people getting GSPs on the east coast (or i should say same amount of dogs as lab and GSP) but isnt it true that Iowa has a lot of GSPs? my pup's parents are from Minn and IA. my brother's friend now got a GSP after seeing my dog and he was a choc lab but now wanted a GSP after he saw mine point and hold (dead lock) and was impressed.

id say it depends on the hunter and what kind of dog he wants to have. suggestions are usually made by other hunters or friends.. but also keep in mind, getting a Lab probably doesnt require you to burn off his energy like a GSP would require. it will depend on that person's life style i would assume.

(LOL) Pheasantaddict, I took a buddy out pheasant hunting Saturday and we were talking about the same subject. My theory is that each state has a "feel" to it. What I mean is that people of a state (in GENERAL) have a certain personality. Some states have "warm" people, some have slightly "closed" people. I've been in states were were I feel like family with it's people and others states were it takes a bit more effort on my part to "brake the ice" if you will.

Dog breeds cary with themselves differant personallities like people (again, in GENERAL) therefore a certain breed just fits a certain people state by state. Just a theory;)

Also discussed saturday (with my buddy) was John Deere guys seem to drive Ford trucks, and Case International guys seem to drive Chevey trucks (LOL). Start looking around and you'll see what I mean :)--1pheas4

I think I was in high school before I realized people hunted with dogs other than GSP's. I'm from Kansas though. ;)

GSP's for pheasants and Britts for quail based on my experience. GSP's do fine on quail don't get me wrong, but I've got a soft spot for britts and I find GSP's to be more effective on the roosters. Labs are GREAT flushing dogs, but I prefer a pointing dog.

I'm just glad my state's dog is a bird dog!

I would say weather is a factor. I take at least two December trips to SD and there have been times when the weather has been really ugly. Too tough on GSP>
