Speaking of low bird numbers...

My little brother lives out in Denver and his wife just did her bi-annual vehicle upgrade, so he gave me his car, I just had to fly out and drive it back. This was during opening weekend of course, but I tell you what, I have NEVER seen so mony hawks in my life!!! It seemed like there was literally one on a tree, or fencepost at least EVERY quarter section. This HAS to have something to do with low bird numbers as well...not as much as bad weather does, I understand, but seriously, I have NEVER seen so many adult hawks. Is there a way to manage these critters? I know they eat mice and other rodents and do serve a purpose, but it really seemed a little out of control. Anyway, I would have posted on here that I was gonna be driving through Kansas, but I didn't wanna get my feelings hurt from not gettin' invited to stop and have coffee with ya'll, or to do a rain dance with Mr. Byrd, lol.:D

Lots of hawks and harriers in NW.

Many years ago I read an article that hawks and owls take an enormous amount of birds each. Last year I watched a red-tail hawk circle and dive near a spot in CRP until the pheasants flushed, looking for a easy strike.

Damn Okies!!:D

Sure can't count on a Sooner to help when you need it.

Hey! We been smackin' Jayhawks around for a long time...hehe Didn't see any birds, saw lots of deer carcasses, but I bet I counted 70 or 80 hawks. And Mr. Maynard, I'm not a Sooner, I am a Soonerhead...you can always count on me:thumbsup:

Heads, heads, heads----cheese heads, sooner heads, etc.
What is this world coming to:confused::)

<chuckle chuckle>

Count me in! I lived in AZ for a few years and was quail hunting up in the mountains about an hour north of Phoenix. There was a hawk following me about 50 yards away. A covey got up and I downed one, but he landed in this little thicket. Before I could get there to pick him up, that hawk swooped in and grabbed him and flew off. I seriously thought about it, but I guess he needed it more than me, and also, it wasn't worth the potential lofty fine for that one bird, I guess.

Hahahaha...how bout' this one...

Is she going to the Pheasant Fest in KC in February. Not that it matters to me, but I hope to be there and maybe meet up with some of the UPH guys there. Maybe I can stop by Cabela's or Bass Pro and see if they have a bobble head pheasant. My hired hand bought me a bobble head elk a few years ago, knowing how I love to elk hunt.

Big predators on the wire. There is a study with results somewhere on the web, Internet is not that big you should be able to find it. But the report I read and cant remember what state or biologist wrote it, say that it all comes down to, you guessed it HABITAT. The article went on saying how they (birds of prey) eat mostly rats and mice. They will most definetly eat Mr. Phez and his wife at the given chance. The article went on to say that with proper Phez habitat they are safe from the big birds. Thats why we see them staking out the thick railroads as the birds come out of cover they get munched. Anyways the article basically said if the habitat is good the predators cant get them. Not sure but you are right, there are a lot in east CO. If anyone knows of this study please advise us.

Serious??? My Dad filled his cow tag outside of Durango Saturday morning. I am planning on making that trip with him next year. He is supposed to be retired by then, but who knows...BTW, How much is an M.R. Byrd hired hand making these days, heck, I may just want to apply, plus, I'm a quarter Cherokee, so I might be able to add some umph to your raindance!!!
Not sure if she's gonna be there, the power of google brought us together, lol. I have a Bass Pro about 1.5 miles from my driveway. I'll check for ya this weekend if you'd like, I plan on doing some early, "Christmas shopping" this weekend.:thumbsup:

I have never been to Durango, but I want to go one day. I hunt elk near Grand Junction, or should I say, I used to hunt elk near Grand Junction. I hope after the first of the year I can start on my "rusty bucket" list, as I call it, that is all those medical procedures I need to complete to get the rusty old body back in shape to do some "bucket list" items. One item on the bucket list is to get both my sons in elk camp with me.

I will be glad to send you an employment application. Be sure to mark the box, "Rain Dance Certified". My hired hand has a love for the outdoors and wildlife, which is a good thing, except sometimes we spend a little too much time glassing deer or in the past, watching pheasants feed.

Hey if you make it to Pheasant Fest, I will buy some good KC BBQ.

Maynard once again has somehow turned the conversation into his favorite passion in life (FOOD). :D
