Something different…

Driving back to the farmhouse yesterday around noon, passing some CREP, I see a solo hunter loading a pointer in a crate…stop to chat…young guy from Wisconsin…after a few minutes, he confides “I’m getting my ass kicked!”…hunted for a few days, no birds…has an 18 month gsp he’s trying to get on birds. I gave him very specific tip on a WPA, and I checked on him a few hours later. No luck, contacted some hens. He’s camping in his pickup…sharp rig, sharp kid…”old soul”, 27 years old. Put him on private land yesterday and today, let him set up camp in our yard. Eating meals with us, offered to let him stay in the house, he graciously declined. Super kid, he’s shot 4-5 birds, and his dog has had contacts galore. Very conscientious young guy…really, really super guy. Best decision I’ve made in a while…👍

That reminds me of these two guys from Iowa. I ran into a couple of years ago in a very remote area, they had no dog, and they said they were deer hunting but I didn't really buy it. So I put them on to this place that was sort of public, And I'm pretty sure they got a few birds.

He put his dog in a box???

This is what the hunting community is about. I think it is fairly easy to identify the "hunters" from "shooters". I'm always willing to help another hunter out, especially when they are struggling. The indicator is often what they don't say...as shooters always ask where are you finding "your" birds.
I know you aren't asking for accolades for your good deed, but sharing something we should all consider doing for the greater good of our like-minded, genuine hunters. Thank you for your generosity.
(I will also acknowledge that most kids are "shooters", as long as their parents isn't a total tool, sometimes, I'll even help make sure that a kid has an opportunity to become a "hunter" after they discover the thrill")

....On a serious note, what you did was taught a young man, a complete stranger, a lesson, a lesson in being a good person and what that "looks" and "feels" like....that is something to be proud of......and how little effort that actually took. That young man will hopefully store that and at some point return to that moment when faced with decisions in his life.
I've seen the evil that humans can be and be unto one another.....

This late afternoon I advised him to hunt a piece of grass, but to watch it for a half hour before he hunted it…he watched over a hundred birds run and fly in…he brought his dog in, but didn’t shoot any of the many, many he could, they weren’t the types of situations he wanted for the pointer, but he was thrilled with the training opportunity…

In many ways, better than shooting birds…luckily, did both! Oh, he made incredible omelets for us on his blackstone flat top out by his truck…he won that grill shooting a 94 at a sporting clays deal this summer…doesn’t half-ass things! Incredible meat smoker, amazing array of sausages he smoked and brought with.

Outstanding.

They were shooting really expensive 3-in shells, and they wounded. I found a whole bunch of wounded birds in there later in the day or the next day. I'm sure it was those two guys, so I guess I made a mistake there.
