Snow

You guys getting More snow in pheasant country.

We've had 8 inches of new and still snowing. Getting to be a serious wildlife problem up here.

We are getting more out here today also. Probably had 8-10 inches since Friday. Going to be a really tough year on the pheasants. There is going to be a substantial decline in the population. Guess we need to pray for good nesting conditions so those that survive can produce a good crop of chicks.

Here are a few pictures I took of the front of my house this morning after blowing out the driveway. I'm running out of room to blow snow.

Yea were getting hammered again, :mad:I give.

Glad we trained Saturday, it went well but might be over now till the melt if we ever get one. 30+ mile an hr wind to go with it right now. It's nasty out. Just got done shoveling the roof off, and the rest comes this afternoon. I fired up the plow truck yesterday, and now can't tell I did a thing.

You guys got some big piles. We really need a big thaw.
Good nesting conditions will help.
Limits may be lots of work. Not all bad, fun to have the pups work.

"Yep", we got the snow alright, you Texan's are welcome to come git all ya want. At least one thing is bigger in MN, "Snow piles". George I am running out of room too.

FCSpringer, you obviously werenâ??t listening when you were studying Texan. The definition of â??gitâ? means to go. Just ask one of the guys from Colorado, they have plenty of Texans.:D

Yeah, I guess your right, I tell my dog that when I am eating.:D Come to think of it, when I was meeting my first girlfriend out at her barn, Her dad was hollering that, just before the 3 shots went off.

FCS, I saw your truck, had 3 bullet holes in the tailgate.:)

If I remember Minnesota 3 shots is all a father is allowed to load in his shotgun, state law.......Bob

No, but it does have a bunch of pellet marks from bird shot. I had the gun set up with a fully rifled barrel for deer. Looked out and seen a fox standing by it. Patterned about a 12 foot donut around him hitting the truck and all around in the snow, but at 10 yards away he never got a pellet. Dam fox. Dam rifled barrel. Not a pellet hit the snow within 5 feet of where he was. Couldn't believe it. Never tried that again.

Yesterday I drove from Aberdeen to the Sioux Falls area and back. Wind and blowing snow that whole trip made for some interesting driving. But the entire trip the landscape looked like the Arctic tundra. All the sloughs and cattails are totally blow full. Tree lines and groves have huge drifts filling them. I don't know where a pheasant, or any other bird or wild animal, would go for shelter or food. Everything is covered. If any birds are still alive they have to be having a difficult time finding food and grit. I think this is the worse winter we have had since the really bad one in '96-'97. That winter wiped out most if not all the pheasants in some areas. It took a few years for them to get their numbers back. I don't want to sound like I'm crying "wolf", but I don't think there is any doubt that the pheasants are going to take a major hit this winter. And I think this pertains to the majority of the state. Even with a good hatch hunting this fall may be "fair" at best.

But you know, If pheasants have some shelter, can get to a food supply, some predator control. At least there will be a breeding population.
There have been other bad Winters.
Yeah for sure, limits will take work.
Not many piles of birds on the tail gate by noon type pics:(

Saw a real good sign today. One place I check frequently was showing no birds for weeks. Today, with 30+ degrees out, I went by and saw 10 birds... all is not lost after all. let's hope for a good spring.

Some sloughs still provide minimal cover in my area I am still seeing birds, but they need food and do not look happy. Three day break here, then more snow???
