Snow

Even what blows into drifts in ditches and sloughs ect. will make more water for weeds and stuff to grow next year. The guys that notill and still had the stubble standing caught most of the snow, the guys that worked the ground had most of it blow off. I have two half mile windbreaks of cedar trees that are about 10 years old that drifted full of snow it will for sure help. Some of them were starting to look pretty rough.

I had 1.41 inches of moisture in the gauge and some may well have blown off as it was level full this morning. That will go a long way. Unfortunately, I drove the length of the W/A this morning and there is no grass showing over the snow. The plum thickets and cedars will have to provide cover for awhile. Gonna be tough.

praying

think i better see if pastor john can spread his praying out just a little bit or wait a week before he does it again. his new puppy is coming out of pretty prairie and they got pounded, the pup just started on dry food, he picks it up 3/22, seems a little early for weaning?????

cheers

For a general rule of thumb, 12" of snow= 1" of moisture! That can change with Spring Snows!

Heavy wet snows can be 7:1 or even 4:1. Good thing it is not lake effect snow where the ratio can be 29:1 !!

Not to bad to have a blizzard this time of the year. Sun will come out melt away places for the birds to feed. Your dried out soil should soak up the snow melt purty good.:)
You guys should get a nice green up this Spring.

quail

i would think that the quail wiill do just fine, rising temp. and some bare ground under shelter will get them through for a couple of day. think one of the bigger dangers too them is them being forced to sit on snow banks for long period of time and getting picked off by hawks and owls

cheers

ya

better call pastor john off for a couple of days. in colorado, we are going to get some tonight thru tomorrow but not much, going to hit w. kansas on sun. and monday. saw that philipsburg got 18"'s and that some parts in kansas picked up another 5 "'s yesterday.

cheers

We got 14 inches. Just drove to town and there were only 2 patches of grass that weren't completely filled with snow in the 9 miles there. The quail's cryptic coloration doesn't help them a bit in these conditions unless they can get into some kind of natural cover. They are forecasting 6-12 inches more tomorrow into Monday.

Colorado is looking good too.

Sunday: Snow lasting all day until a couple of hours past sunset.
6 to 11 inches by Sunday night around the Denver metro area with 7 to 14 inches in the foothills, 3 to 7 inches in Northern Colorado and 5 to 9 inches on the plains.

Woohoo!

I think we ended up with 9 here. They say another 6-12 on the way! Would rather it be rain but anything is better than nothing! It's just tough on the already stressed bird populations.

Oh Neat, CBS just updated the forecast from 6-12 to 8-15 with 50 mph winds! The new snow should move like crazy on top of the crusted old snow. This could close things down for several days! The drifting will also be very hard on the birds. Get your shopping done now because you may not get out for some time.

She is cranking here and it is only blowing 25 !! Hang on out there!!!

Talked to my buddy in Pueblo, CO this morning. He picked up his new setter pup, granddaughter of Long Gone Boston and linebred Tug Hill Ballerina, at the Denver airport last night. He said it came into Pueblo this morning and had already whacked Denver.

My buddy called me from Lane County and he found a dead hen this morning lying on top of the snow between 2 of his out buildings. He has started to throw down some milo. He told me he has around 50 birds at the house with the majority being Roosters. I told him to make sure he just doesn't put the feed in a pile and to spread it out in a long line over 200 feet so the roosters are not chasing the hens away from feeding.
