I shoot an ancient 16 gauge Hercules Model 50 which is actually a Stevens 5100.

7/8 oz steel #4 in the right barrel and 7/8 oz steel #3 in the left.

I’ll be taking my ‘57 Ugartechea sidelock 12 gauge into the field today. I routinely shoot one of my 16’s as well, I have 3 Uggie boxlocks. Almost brought one of my 2 AYA 20’s with this trip…the #2 sidelock…but didn’t. Next year I’m gonna get some #6 lead and kill a few with one of my 28 gauges early season…Parker repro most likely. I use S x S’s for most of my prairie hunting in Sept/early Oct…sharpies and huns. Used my AYA 4/53 20 gauge mostly this year, about 15 days…sweet and smooth gun!

I love sxs's but don't particularly care for the way anything larger than a 20 carries. So, .410 squierrels and rabbits. 28 and 20's for quail, grouse, pen raised phez.

I have a Miroku 12ga. that I have used a few times on pheasants. I mostly shoot Browning O/U's but recently picked up an Ithaca by SKB 20ga. SxS that I will have to try out. It is a light little gun that should be a pleasure to carry.

Since we're talking side by sides what's would be a good smaller gauge(like 20 or 28) gun for someone looking for a light weight quail gun? Say around the 2k mark for fun...

Ugartechea grade 2 or 3 boxlock…love mine!!! Mine’s a grade 1, so it’s an extractor gun.

I sometimes use a Merkel 1620 (16 gauge on a 20 ga. frame) and it weighs 6 lbs., single trogger, splinter forend, choked ic/mod, wonderful gun to carry. I've shot ducks, roosters and quail with it. Bought it at Scheel's Iowa City in 2003 but haven't seen any more since then.

I prefer extractors actually.

Extractors, splinter front end, double triggers, straight grip and I would be set. Lighter and shorter the better. I guess chokes would be a nice thing but I don't really need that.
