shrooms

found more dried up then fresh. It's almost over in SEK,it's so green, you can't see crap.Might try next weekend, but that would be it.

2 of the guys I work with found a bunch. Someone pissed the farmer off that was letting us hunt  by driving through his field to check their set-lines (didn't have permission to set lines there), so he said "I just can't let people come on my land b/c everyone else thinks they can just go in behind them." SO, time to find some new spots. Fortunately I have a couple other options and I'll be exploring them tonight.

Hope you find some Wildcat!!

Joe, at least you've got a few in the freezer. Those dry ones aren't much good.

Wildcat,

Just talked to another guy that found 15-20lbs. between him and 3 friends Saturday and Sunday within 20 miles of my house. I must just suck at this. Oh well, I'm not the type to give up easily so I'll be back at it tonight in a new spot.

Ok, I'm giving up on Wabaunsee county Morel hunting. We found 1 stinking mushroom in a little over 3hrs of hunting yesterday, while another friend went through 2 other spots and found 3. Something is different about this soil than the soil I grew up on, so I'm heading back home after work today to some old stompin' grounds. The old timers are telling me not to panic b/c "They'll still be up for the rest of the week and prolly through the w/e." One of 'em said he's found over 20 lbs. thusfar and handed me about 2lbs. He's going back out now and said he expects to find another 10lbs. or so to finish filling his freezer and calling it a season. Sure wish I had his problem:rolleyes:

That's not at all what I was hoping to hear, KB... I have been striking out this year also, but haven't been for a week now. I am planning to go first thing in the morning (in Wabaunsee county). Hopefully I will have better luck. If not, I might make a trip down to Council Grove.

Well then, I'm glad I have some good news to report. Last night a buddy of mine and I took a trip "back home" and found a couple pounds or better. I have a lot of thorn sores to show for it, but I also got me some tasty shrooms. Not a trash bag full, but enough to inspire me to keep going and certainly enough to enjoy w/ a meal or 2. They're out there and the old timers claim they'll be out there for the rest of the week and possibly through the w/e.

Good to hear KB. I haven't been back out yet. Looks like rain today, so perhaps tomorrow will be another promising day. At least there's hope, lol. :D

I just don't understand how these old men go out and find 'em like their just growing up everywhere. I must suck at morel hunting too...

Well,,, about 10 seconds after I started shroom hunting this morning I found one the size of a (no joke) BASEBALL! I thought it was going to be the shroom hunt of a lifetime. Well, it wasn't. Two hours later I found another one... That was it. 2 shrooms...

I wouldn't have even found the second one, but I found an old cow skull that was upside down in the mud. I picked it up to check it out and went to set it on a stump. Poking out of a deep leaf pile next to the stump was about 1/4" of the top of the second shroom I found. Will post a pic in a minute.

It seems like I always find them when I stop to take a leak or something. I bet that's why old men find so many... Because they pee so often.

Pic of the big shroom and a big deer track. Would have been nice to see the bruiser that made the tracks too...

Thats a nice one!!
It's over in SEK,they might be there, but it is so green, can't see them.Oh well,it was a good year.
Hope you guys up north do well.

HA!! That's very funny and the reasoning has validity. The pheasants tend to get up while you're draining the unit as well....and I know that's the only way I can get ducks in my dekes.

Glad you found a couple at least, hopefully you'll find more before it's too late. I'm looking forward to giving it one more try. Probably going back to where I told you I was before. We got into a real nice patch down there and I used to stumble across 'em there as a kid regularly (can only remember a couple of the spots though b/c I didn't eat them back then).

Good luck and thanks for the report!

I probably won't get out to look again until next weekend. The season will probably be over by then, but I have a buddy coming to town and we want to give it a shot. You never know... We hit the jackpot last year when everybody said it was the worst season ever, so maybe he's just lucky. We will be in the same general region as your secret spot.;)

The great news is that I might actually make it out fishing this weekend.:D Haven't been all year, which is totally unheard of for me.

I was just given a nice bag of them this is my first experience with them how do you cook them usually ?

Dip in egg, roll in flower w/ a touch of seasoned salt, then fry 'em up in butter. You're cooking them until they're as crispy as you like 'em. Don't leave 'em to soak in water for days prior b/c they'll lose their texture.

Just found 43 today while out turkey hunting. They all had some good size too them but are really starting to dry out a good bit, nothing a little soak couldn't take care of though. I have still been finding them over the last couple of days or so with the biggest being right at the 9 inch mark. If we could get a bit of moisture I am willing to bet you will still see some pop up one more time.

How'd someone ever find shrooms out there with no moisture?

You guys better seriously send GCB a photo of what they look like!!!!!!!!!!! I am worried for the neighbors !!!!!!!!! LOL

alright smart A$$$$es I cooked some up tonight and they are to say the least addictive little things:10sign:

First you need to catch a mess of crappie and fillet them. Then rinse off the morels to get the dirt and grit off them. Then use the same seasoned salt and breading or batter on both the fillets and morels. Deep fry them both in peanut oil and enjoy a meal fit for a king.

There are other ways to prepare them, but IMHO they are the highlight of any fish fry.
