Shotgun shells, $.49/box

I made my annual trip to Academy Sports to buy a years worth of ammo during their August sale. This year they had Winchester @ $4.49/box, $44.90/flat of 10 boxes.

I loaded up a grocery cart of #8 Winchesters, then picked up one flat of Federals @$4.99/box because I wanted some 7.5s for late season doves and quail.

Went to the checkout:

$44.90, kaching, kaching, kaching, kaching, kaching, kaching, kaching...

Then she scanned the flat of Federals, $4.99 kaching.

"Excuse me Miss, but that's not right, It should be $49.90"

"No sir, I scanned it, and it came up $4.99."

"Well that's a mistake. It's 10 boxes @$4.99, should be $49.90."

"No sir, I scanned it, and it's $4.99."

"Yes, I see that, but it's wrong, it should be $49.90."

"Well, all I can do is scan it. It's $4.99. Do you want it or not?"

"Yes, I want it, but I want to pay the right price which is ten times that."

"I can't do anything about that. It scans $4.99, so take it or leave it."

"I'd be cheating you. It should be $49.90."

"Look, mister, it's $4.99."

"Are you absolutely sure you want to sell that flat of 10 boxes for $4.99?"

"Look, mister, I'm busy. The price is $4.99. Now either take it, or don't, I don't care."

"Okay, if you're sure."

"I'm sure."

So I left with a flat of Federals @$4.99.

Should I go back tomorrow for another 50 flats?

Wow, you can't help the helpless. I would go back and buy all they will sell...

A local store here, still put manual stickers on shellboxes, which is no problem to me. The problem for the store is that whomever is putting the stickers on doesn't know that the price should be higher on say 3" goose loads, than cheap trap loads or 2 3/4" 1 1/8oz steel is priced $2 more per box than 3" 1 1/4oz in the same brand, etc.

Good help is hard to find.

You can't fix stupid... :nutz:

Go back and clean em out and then if you'd like, I'd take some off your hands. Say.... an even $8/flat. sound like a deal?

Sounds like you encountered a disgruntled employee. I'd let the manager know. Going back for more would be no better than stealing.

Problem is this ideot just stoped good future sales. To make up for loss. Most likely they lost out on more then 50 bucks, cause everyone else got the same deal. I think I would tell a manager, so she learns respect for her work place. And understands if she makes bad decisions for her employer, she sinks her own ship. Wish we had acamady here though. Those stores seem to have good buys on lots of stuf.

Sorry Mr big box store....I have been screwed more times by them..including when you try and return a gift from Christmas and they give you 1/4 what it cost because 2 hours before closing on Christmas eve they put it in clearance..even though the person that bought it for you paid full price. They don't want to hear no story..Blah, Blah, Blah...They nearly had to call the cops at a K-Mart one night when they did the same BS. Every person in the store knew I was there...Sorry they mismark something..it's mine..end of story. They would rip you off and never look back. Congrats the little guy wins one minute battle.

I have had the same type of experience, disgruntable cashiers that think they know better no matter what you say, the heck with them, I will have a check in the mail to you for 100 flats of shells and will drive up to pick them up. ( - :
Just kidding with my luck they will be$14.99 a box, but would like to have an Academy store here.

That's the problem with the big box stores, even if you get the clerk who cares, SOMEWHERE in her chain of command will be an idiot to crush thinking and prevent rational decision making.

I once was buying some round balls for my muzzleloader at Dick's Sporting Goods. I'm in Massachusetts, so we need a permit in order to buy ammo (seriously - even worse, you can't POSESS ammo without a permit, and ammo is any of the components, so if you're planning a trip here, make sure you don't have any spent shells) but not for MLs.
The girl at the register asked to see my permit, at which point the manager nastily tells her that she doesn't need to see my permit (no Jedi hand wave, though). The girl asks the manager why, since I'm buying ammo and the manager told her, "He isn't buying ammo, he's only buying bullets" and walks off. I explained the difference to the girl, but I think her days of caring about her career there are done, probably for the best.

Sorry, but I would rather sleep at night with integrity knowing I did the right thing. And this is NOT! what we need to teach AMERICAS youth!!!!....
Just my 5 bucks... Weather I was screwed in the past or not...

Call it my once in a great while Robbin Hood act. These big box stores have come in and crushed far too many mom and pop gun shops, bait stores, Etc. We had four mom and pop gun shops and bait & tackle shops in our town. They are all gone because of the big box stores who moved in. One a 70 year old couple who had been in business for over 40 years. They had a business that didn't get them rich but put food on the table and payed their bill's. That shop was their life and their customers, many life long friendships. Now they sit on social Security and food stamps because of big box stores. FC..I SLEEP FINE AT NIGHT.

The lady at the checkout was a disgruntled employee for whatever reason.
She had to know better?

This what I would have done. Said, "Lady" Your going to need to scan 1 box at a time. Clearly the case of shells is labeled for individual by the box sale.

Lots of retail is done that way.

Grocery store brings out a case of Cheerios for example. Labeled for sale at $4 per box. Who would feel good about buying the case for 4 bucks?
I would have corrected the problem, probably just go to the next checkout.
Not everybody is stupid, most all checkout cashiers would figure it out pretty easily.:)

Not really, no.
Some of that happens of course and it can appear very unfair but the so-termed big box stores simply provide an answer for a large number of customers....that blame and trend is not lain at a single door.
I knew one local small gun store...the owner was a jerk of the first water....small stores, mom & pop or whatever does not always equate to either good or worthy of support.

As far as ripping off a store because of it's size or connection with a trend or employee error...well, I reckon that is what situational effects addresses...and that can be a shame and darned difficult to explain to any younkers watching.

Sometimes the computer trumps intelligence. I had a similar experience years back. I wanted a 20 ga Mossberg 500. They had two models. The plain barrel gun was listed at $119. The fancier one with better checkering, choke tubes and a vent rib was listed at $149.00. I wanted the better model and when the clerk rung it up, it said $119.00. I told him that was the wrong price. He insisted that what was in the computer was what the price was. I tried to explain, but he just said, "I couldn't change the price if I wanted to. That's what's in the computer. If I tried to charge you more, I'd lose my job." I took it home for $119.00.

Look, it happening the way it did. Fine. But. Now go back?? NO. That is pre meditated theft in my mind. I would let management know. Period... Just me. I don't like to steal I guess. That first time he tried his silly ass off, I say hell with it. Its the going back to rip some one off I would say is an issue and not much more different then the guy stealing a purse from an old lady. And please, the little man card is old. The little town still has them if they have the customer base. It is not just because wall mart came in that small towns dry up 50 miles away. It is many things. A good fair small business man doing well here is a common theme. Small gun shops are doing fine. They have way more inventory, and way better deals. They carry many things big box does not. All our small bait shops are doing very well here. Stop in at Christophersons and see how he does with wall mart and fleet farm just down the road. Stop in at gillis drug and general store and see how he does with wall mart and fleet farm just down the road. 2 of the most successful business men around.. Those big stores bring affordable goods to many. They bring jobs. They bring goods never seen in small shops at reasonable prices. Many small stores closed have the same folk working at them. I see a few at Menard's. They love it. Not worried about footing the bills. Stable pay. So they are not so bad for the people as some portray. And Stealing is stealing. Don't care how u look at it.;)

agree 100%. You either have integrity or you don't. Liars and thieves justify there actions everyday. I try to deal with my part of it. If your grandma owned the store would you do it?
