Scouting Trip

After reading all the doom and gloom, the 'I drove 3000 miles all over hell and back and never saw a single bird', I was pretty discouraged.

Well, good news boys, I know where I'm hunting this opener, saw two pheasants today. Beat that. Nope, not telling where either.

My guess is those two birds are located somewhere south of Nebraska, east of Colorado, north of Oklahoma and west of Missouri ;). I, myself have found one bird in that location as well; should be an interesting year.

Someone's pen net must have a hole in it.

I heard two cocks cackling last weekend while stalking turkey.

I normally don't share my honey holes....but this year is gonna be tough, so I'll make an exception...I found it!!!

I think you guys may have stumbled on the birds I've been scouting. I think there are only 4 pheasants in Kansas this year so we have to be looking at the same place.

There is one rooster and one hen between you and I Tim. We can meet at the interstate some morning to see if we can find him:thumbsup:

I had to drive from Manhattan to Alliance NE today.

So I thought that I would take US 36 from Marysville to the CO boarder.
It was not real encouraging.

I did not see one live pheasant. A couple dead on the road.
There are still some crops out, but I would have thought that I would have seen one :(

I just did a 2 day scouting trip and Northwest looks pretty good compared to central kansas. I was seeing a lot from La Crosse to Norton and thought NC would be good but i just wasnt seeing that much from Beloit to smith center

I will be heading to La Crosse opening weekend so Im pretty pumped it still looks to be ok!

Opening day plans

Keep those scouting reports coming! I will spend opening day at Bill Snyder Family Stadium, (hopefully) watching KSU build its bowl resume. :D Best of luck to everybody!

Probably won't get too serious about the birds until Thanksgiving. Please leave one somewhere in western KS for me to find.

Some damn truck driver must have hit my two birds!!!! Well season's over, I'll have to wait till the spring for turkeys.

I was in the Lacrosse and Norton Areas a month ago for work, didnt see nary a bird. As stated saw a dead one or two on the side of the road, but thought Id see a couple with all the driving i did. Wasnt promising.

Did spend some time around Garden City Ulysses and Elkhart helping with a hail storm and saw quite a few. Thats definitely where Im headed. Plenty of scaled quail mixed in there as well.

Well I drove back today. Did see one pheasant, by a pile of milo the size of Mount Blue :)

Going to have to work for them more this year.

Went out this morning to work the dogs a little. Really want to get the pup into a covey of quail and some singles.

Didn't find any quail in some of my best producing spots. :(

Steve,
I hope you can get the pups into some birds soon, since you are in Manhattan have you ever hunted Fort Riley. I understand there are some quail there or has been some in the past. I thought about it a time or two as I am retired military I could stay on post but do not know the regulations on guns and dogs there. I think I will check it out tomorrow, have to get ready to pull security at the Shriners club here tonight so will do so tomorrow.
Jim
