Said goodbye to an old friend today

Thanks again guys I really appreciate all the kind words. It's very comforting hearing from dog people such as yourselves who understand what feels like to say your last goodbye's. Having my Willi around definitely helps me keep my mind occupied.

Boy do I know your pain. I put my 14 year old Chessie down a short time ago. My heart felt prayers go out to you in this very tough time.

Onpoint

I remember your post, and I also was thinking at the time that Nash is probably nearing his time as he was not responding to any of the pain meds. The decision can be agonizing, but you must be unselfish and do what is right for the dogs well being.

I'm so sorry for your loss Birdshooter. It's the toughest thing about having dogs and it never gets any easier. I've been through it recently myself, again, and it is so painful. Give your other buddy some more hugs until if/when you get another pup. I'm currently looking so I can regain my PairOfLabs moniker.

Birdshooter- I'm very sorry for your loss, its one of the hardest things we bird hunters have to do but it's better than making your buddy suffer. I'm afraid I will be doing the same thing fairly soon with my 12 year old springer. I'm sure you have many great memories of Nash to keep for the rest of your life.

My condolences . . . it's always a tough thing. On the plus side, although the experience is extremely painful the tremendous joy a dog brings into our lives makes that pain pale in comparison. Dogs only have one fault, actually . . . they don't live long enough. God Bless.

Thanks fellas, appreciate the kind words. I think the hardest part about this whole process is accepting the fact that you did the right thing. And I'm slowly coming to terms with that.

There is sorrow enough in the natural way
From men and women to fill our day;
And when we are certain of sorrow in store,
Why do we always arrange for more?
Brothers and sisters, I bid you beware
Of giving your heart to a dog to tear.

Buy a pup and your money will buy
Love unflinching that cannot lie--
Perfect passsion and worship fed
By a kick in the ribs or a pat on the head.
Nevertheless it is hardly fair
To risk your heart to a dog to tear.

When the fourteen years which Nature permits
Are closing in asthma, or tumour, or fits,
And the vet's unspoken prescription runs
To lethal chambers or loaded guns,
Then you will find--it's your own affair--
But ... you've given your heart to a dog to tear.

When the body that lived at your single will,
With its whimper of welcome, is stilled (how still!)
When the spirit that answered your every mood
Is gone--wherever it goes--for good,
You will discover how much you care,
And will give your heart to a dog to tear.

We've sorrow enough in the natural way,
When it comes to burying Christian clay.
Our loves are not given, but only lent,
At compound interest of cent per cent.
Though it is not always the case, I believe,
That the longer we've kept 'em, the more do we grieve:
For, when debts are payable, right or wrong,
A short-term loan is as bad as a long--
So why in--Heaven (before we are there)
Should we give our hearts to a dog to tear?

Birdshooter I'm so sorry to hear of your loss! That is the most difficult part of owning a pet...they become more like family. At least you loved Nash enough to not let him suffer. You had 14 great years and he won't be forgotten. God Bless. Cara...a.k.a Rooster Fetcher.
