Sad sight

a good tip I got from an "old timer"

before you put a dog "on the ground" place a bowl/bucket of water next to the vehicle and make sure that the dog sees/smells that it is there - if for some reason you lose your dog in that field it'll at least know where to find water, if you leave the area looking for your dog, leave a bowl of food next to the water, even better leave the dog's kennel if you can

you guys get the idea

This is why I like my dogs to work at least in reasonable range and with in gun range if a flusher. Around here a long ranging dog is gone from site in 4 seconds, all rolling plains. And yes this is a good idea, done it with coon hounds. Also your shirt or jacket that smells like you. Came back in the morning and did have a dog laying there before, twice.

Wow, that'd be really hard for me to go home for the night and leave a dog out in the field somewhere; it'd be hard to leave the dog, but the hardest part would be getting in the door at home 'cuse my wife would be ticked if I didn't have both the dogs when I came to the door! :)

i have the dogtra 2500t&b collar so i can beep them to see wear there at. a couple years a go me and my uncle came across some out of state hunters that just got done hunting a field we stopped to see how they where doing. One guy was mad at his dog yell at it as soon as he hit it with his fist i got out of the truck and put him on his ass. i grabbed the dog and put it in the truck. he got up and grabbed is gun and came tords me as soon as he pointed it at me my uncle got out of the truck with his ar-15 and told the guy to put it away. we called the law and they came out and took him in. I cant stand people that beat dogs or any other animals. there are to many stray hunting dogs left after hunting season.

I applaud your work and actions. I agree violence should be a last resort, but this guy definitely deserved to be knocked on his *ss. Dogs are such wonderful creatures that give you their all and expect nothing in return. Especially hunting dogs that want to please so much. Glad to see your you had the extra firepower in the truck for your uncle to back you up. That would just make me sick to hear a dog whelping from being beaten or abused.

i can see if you are tapping them on the noise or pinch there ear and telling them no. but when you start to beating your dog not cool at all.

Saw this same dog

rOOs7a,

What day did you see this pup. I found him just off the road about 3ft from a WIHA. This was on Tuesday the 7th I believe. I also checked the collar. This dog looked to me like he was peppered. I could be wrong but it sure looked like dried blood on his left rear side / back and a couple of spots on his legs. I intended to place a post first chance I got similar to yours (had to drive back to Ca). I find it hard to believe I could find no sighns posted or threads on this website. I was in shock someone could leave their dog in the field dead or alive! I have also lost a dog while hunting in the Sierra Nevada Mnts of California. I surched until dark and came back the next day after leaving her kennel and food & water where I last saw her. Lucky for me I left word with local animal control & and someone actually trapped her for me one full week later. She got pretty freaked out and would not come to anyone and no longer hunts or even steps a foot off my half acre.

People definatly look at dogs in a different light now days. My grandpa viewed dogs as tools and when they had out lived there usage they went to the back and were shot. I dont agree with that outlook on dogs but many people still feel that way.
Team68, I'm surprised the cop didnt give you a ticket for putting that guys dog in your truck. No matter if you dont like how that guy treated his dog its still his dog and his property. That situation could have gotten ugly in a hurry.

the guy got his dog back after they took it to the vet. I know most of the law in this town and they are good friends with the family

Well hopefully the jack wagon learned a lesson. Dont beat your dogs and dont point a gun at someone that has more fire power.

Bells and Shock Collars Save Dogs

Both bells and shock collars save dogs from getting lost and dying from lack of water, food, or by cruelty.

Probably the worst thing I have ever heard. I can't understand how people think they can keep a dog in run all year long and in November expect the dog to perform. Deer hunters will shoot dogs if they are running deer, I actually caught a gsp once that the owner let run free after a couple of days watching him run deer out of where I was hunting. I wrote a nasty note and taped it to his collar and took him home, since I knew where he came from. The guy was turning his dogs loose during the day and letting them in at night. Never saw him again.
I have heard that you should never put the dogs name on a collar, free bird dog theory. Brass plate with your name, and phone numbers is a must. Beeper collars are excellent, I like mine set to tone on point, on off from the remote when needed. I'd never quit looking.
Do you guys with a Garmin use an ecollar also?

Yep, an e-collar with teh Garmin works well. It has kept the little Brit from getiing lost. Before the Garmin, we lost her on the last evening of a hunt. Got dark. Thought she was gone. She made it back to the truck. Garmin was purchased right after that. She is the only one that needs it. The other dogs are big enough to see romping through the grass.

My mom and stepdad rescued a gsp from the humane society last new years eve. She's a great dog, a little annoying in the fact that she wants to play fetch 24/7, litterally. Still breaks my heart some one left her in a field. Luckily someone found her before it was to late.

If I lost my dog I don't know if I would be able to sleep that night

I was hunting some really TALL, THICK CRP on Friday. When my dog gets in the really thick brush, I usually just watch for the moving grass or stop and listen to hear where she is. It was kind of unnerving on Friday though, because it was so windy that all the grass was moving and it was all rustling so I couldn't hear anything. Luckily, she does a good job of checking in, but I still had a few moments where I totally lost track of where she was. (and she hunts fairly close) It sure made me think about one of those gps collars. I would be pretty devastated if I lost my dogs.

About the dog beater... I think it's strange how a person would kick and punch his dog for screwing up in the field, but probably forgive his hunting buddy's indiscretions. Imagine how much you would enjoy hunting if you hunting buddies got angry and punched you every time you missed a bird... Whenever my dog does something undesirable, I figure, "Well,,, I trained him..." Maybe the dog beater should have punched himself for doing a bad job of training the dog.

My dog doesn't go into the field without her Tri-Tronics or her Garmin. If I didn't come home with my Brit after a day in the field, I might as well not come home. Im lucky that my wife loves our little Brit as much as I do. Actually, I think she loves our dog more then me. I can't believe that someone could leave their dog in the field, and I find it even more repulsive that someone could pepper a hunting dog. My Brit is laying on the couch with me as I write this, and yes, she sleeps under the covers. Shes my hunting buddy, but shes my family first and foremost. If she got injured tomorrow and couldn't step in the field ever again, I would still have that bond with her. Garmins, chips, and collars with names on them are cheap.

My two GSP and the Welsh are our family as well. I have a very nice dog box that I carry around in the back of my truck to put my stuff in because the girls are riding in the cab with me and there isn't room for my stuff.
They sleep in the bed, on the couch or anywhere they want.
I can't even imagine what would happen if I or my wife saw someone hit, kick or otherwise abuse them.
They aren't the best hunting dogs but they are ours and we will have them til they die of old age.
I use a locator on my TT collar when I hunt in grass where I can't see them. I've toyed with the idea of the Garmin but just haven't had the spare change for three of them.
