I shoot birds for fun no 2 ways around it. I bird hunt because I enjoy it.

Certainly not going to say somebody hunting for food is less respectful than me who does it for fun even if I do it over dogs on foot.

What history are you talking about? Care to post a link or point me towards any kind of info that talks about capercaillie's in russia getting gunned down to the point that the population suffered.

What clued you too the fact these guys were hunting to eat? The over under shotguns? Those guys were equipped as well as myself? And I eat decent

Well I suppose western enlightened game management takes a back seat to no one. We are obviously doing a marvelous job. 10 years of such enlightened leadership among the capers and we'd be starting a capercallie forever society in a futile attempt to re-establish the rapidly diminishing population.

I don't believe I implied a perfect or enlightened game management/habitat vision here at home at all.
I do believe I implied that one should always try to learn from the Past.
Not sure why the Russians or anyone would not try to be...better...at something that others have struggled thru....and continue, I reckon.
Just seems the wisest course rather than don some blinders and blaze away....simply 'cause they can.
Each to their own.

Carptom--I think you and I are on two different pages here. ;)

Anyway, I guarantee you, if I lived in a very remote part of Russia and depended on wild game to feed my family, I wouldn't think twice of doing what they are doing as long as it's legal. Even if it means to keep the boat moving to increase my chances of bring food home for the table.

Would I practice what they are doing for sport? No. It's not my thing to shoot from a moving vehicle, what ever it may be.

Either way, I say it's their business, their county, their customs, let it be. God knows we have a mountain of our own issues to worry about.

I would also do anything to feed myself and family, legal or not. My problem is you can't gather their need to kill for food from a simple video. That is making many assumtions.

If you study Russian history, you will find that after the white/red war, and the great purge, in which anyone who was enlightened or worth more than a few dollars was killed. All traditions of sport, the arts, any vestige of creativity, vision of the future was lost. It takes a while, we hunt the way we do because it's what we have been taught and read about all our lives. These guys are winging it, developing their own traditions, or as we see it lack there of. The entire country is struggling and using all it's time and energy, to make a decent living. What was the state of game management in the U.S. in 1890? Our great grandfathers would have used an ouboard to chase ducks, they didn't have one! Fairly similar, market gunning day and night, fresh off the extermination of the buffalo, as a designed government mandate. As this remote area becomes more accessable and mining, logging, oil exploration moves in, it will vanish to. About that time someone will proclaim the tragedy and sound the alarm. By the way if you want to see an outrage search the plight of barren ground caribou herd in our neighboring Canada, seems hydro electric projects, logging, open pit mining have ground down the population from 14,000 a few years ago, to around 700 currently. The minerals, oil, and particularily the hydro power comes to the U.S. Just a few problems closer to home, with citizenry supposedly like minded, yet instead of a couple of guys wilding down a river, we have mass destruction of an ecosystem, enjoy.

My question is still not answered. As always, I appreciate the history lesson sprinkled with opinion.............. But I simply said I found the practice distastefull. I will always have compassion for the game that is pursued. Just because these guys are Russian and in the wilderness, does not mean they are poor meat hunters. For all we know this was Russia's version of U-guide:D. Wow I have phucked off a bunch of time at work today but it is our slow time, and raining all day.

I turned the video off early into it. To me it was a group of Russians blowing each others eardrums out. The quality of the video was such, that they weren't there to hunt, not there to feed.
They were there to film and publish a U-tube video.

They filmed it to elisit a response. I can hear the now; shoot that one , get another one, wait wait get a close up of the river that will really mess with their minds.

I have to agree with the OP these Russians are scum.

It was apparently good when I put that link!
We got a bit vibrant by the discussion at present!
Everything takes place in the world but we can not help it.
And this is only an issue to be taken too seriously!

But who wrote that the white / red war of Independence!
It happened in Finland!
And white won the War of Independence!
The case does not belong to this in any way, but I can tell you if you do not know!
of U.S. military's finest heroes in the Vietnam War was a Finnish!
His name is Lauri Törhönen aka Larry Thorn!

I respect him!

I'm Finnish and I'm proud of it!

Smile and wind up!

This man not a russian! He was Finnish hunter and soldier from north Finland!
Who did not use motor vehicles for hunting!
Pure hunting!!
Please read these links!
Then you will understand why I do not like hunting in Russia and the Russian way of life!

Life does go on my friend.

I can see how you have pride for one of your nations finest solders.;)

One thing you and I can agree on is how nasty the Soviets were. My family dealt with them too. They took everything and tried their best to take their lives too.

By the grace of God and the help of the Russian/Greek Orthodox church, my grandfather and his family some how escaped a certain and unjustified death.

Now his blood line lives on in USA and I'm very happy about that!!!

Why don't you go back and research the Bolshievik revolution. After your challenge I went back and verified. Forces under Communist control, were called "Red Russians", troops loyal to the Czar were called "white Russians". Reds won. US had forces on the ground in 1918, officially opposing Red army forces. many americans unofficially fought on both sides. If you don't want to read about it watch Dr.Zhivago, there are clips on youtube. I'm through with the issue. Good Hunting.
