rooster, jackrabbit, and 2 coyotes

what a sight- wife says "what's that out there"

look and I can see something out 300 or so yards in the wheat stubble

I go and get the 10 power binoculars-
nice coyote walking- watching- see another- some distance behind but obviously pacing the one in front- the front one stops- tail is up straight with the back- second coyote freezes- first one circles and again freezes- looks like a perfect point-

20 or so feet away a rooster stands tall- figure I'm going to see a stalk and kill- nope- first coyote moves on and the sceond soon continues-

rooster ducks down-

front coyote spins and takes off- second coyote intercepts- now full out run- dust flying- a jackrabbit is in front of the second coyote- jackrabbit is really flying with the coyote gaining- 200 yards or so sprint- dust flies as the coyote catches up to the jackrabbit- then away goes the jackrabbit- coyote stands- other coyote comes up at a trott- they touch noses- continue on the dirrection they origianally were on- think it's a male and female that have the den not to far away

fast fast coyotes- first time I've seen a real chase to kill and eat- not sure if my Britt's are faster than those coyotes- not sure I want to be in the position to find out

i agree about their speed. I have flushed them hunting but never really got to watch them more than a couple of hundred yards. Couple weeks ago i watched a pair crossing the road in front of my house, running through a 1/4 section of grass. Un freakin believable how fast they were at full speed for probably a 1/4 mile or so. These were big healthy dogs. I have a border collie, which by the way is the best dog i have ever owned, she is fast but could have never caught these two. Their burst to full speed was amazing.

Interesting carptom. I have some friends out your way that train Border Collies. They live off 182nd street.

I'll open the gate and three Britt's scream out at a dead race- turn when they hit the plowed and planted wheat field- yea- so dry here nothing came up- every now and then a jack rabbit bounds out of the corners- sometimes mine give chase- actually not bad in the control issue- they'll turn and come back fairly shortly- I don't want them to catch one- pretty close a time or two-

what surprised me was that the front coyote walked past the rooster- course I didn't know it was there- untill that coyote was 20 feet away- but the second sure should have seen it- just goes to show- rooster doesn't always run or fly when danger is close

makes me think- coyote would rather eat rabbit- but then again- maybe it smelled the rabbit and not the rooster

I've seen these two a few times hunting just as they were- as long as they don't come to close to the yard I'll leave them alone

where at off 182nd. We are like dog central. I have pointer trainer on property next to me, and beagles on the property behind me. Wow you should here the feeding time at the beagle farm at 6:30 in the morning.

Simple. They prefer rabbit to pheasant.

Uncle Buck- thank you- post sort of was going somewhere I know not

I've watched coyotes mousing- they approach- stand rock still- then jump in the air-

to watch a coyote jump a jackrabbit- team up- and chase and catch- not somthing we see everyday

I'm not sure I'd want to live that close to a Beagle farm, I enjoy sleeping in on weekends!

They live just South of 24 hwy on 182nd, or Starcher lane as I call it, because there's a ton of them that live on that street. The Mom and Dad divided the land a long time ago and gave it to their boys.

Sorry for hijacking your thread Shadow, that is a neat story. Too bad you didn't have a high-powered camcorder to document incidents such as the one you seen - it would be great to watch!

Just proves that 'Yotes also know late-season, running devil-birds are challenging . . . great story & rare opportunity to see!

Wildcat- no worries- this happened pretty fast and quite aways way

koja- the second coyote- I figure the female- was walking and not more than 10 feet behind and to the side when the rooster stood- surprised me- rooster ducked down-

I thought when the first coyote spun he was going to charge and the second female was to catch it- sure seemed an easy task- but the spin was on the jackrabbit- still feel that second coyote was concentrating on the rooster-

Coyotes are survivors . . . maybe they figured the larger critter was the best bet for a meal for two. I've seen 'yotes take everything from mice, fish (saw one chasing spawning carp one time), to gamebirds & deer. They do discern what the easiest prey may be in short order . . . around here, domestic pets get nabbed quite frequently.

sounds like you are the one who should have a high powered cam corder

nobody is shooting at coyotes arround here- they are bold- they get too bold and I'll bring out the long range big gun

I could have hit these two- but heck- if they'll chase and kill rabbits they can come arround all they want- they cross the road and get within 100 yards- I'll kill them with the 22

a high powered cam corder

Can't afford one . . . too caught-up with fine shotguns & fly rods.
