Reports ? Combo Quail/Pheasant reality ?

There is a brewery in Sylvan Grove called Fly Boy. Good food , good beer. A little NE of Russell.

I've been there! It is good food! That was the first and only time I've eaten a grilled cheese hamburger, basically a grilled cheese sandwich on top of a hamburger. When you walk all day you NEED those extra calories.

No joke , the most un expected place I have ever found a brewery , Ive been to a ton but never in a town that small.

If it were me I'd head straight to iowa and get in on there bird hunting before it closed if I were looking for an out of state bird hunting trip. Kansas is in the pits right now for pheasants. Iowa is on the upswing for sure!

agree! seems like they recovered much faster than Kansas, at least in some spots.

Trip Report as promised.

My cousin and I went completely blind and picked a WIHA spot northeast of Russell. Had a rooster pointed and shot 200 hundred yards from the truck. We were both pretty shocked and excited and stayed that direction both days.

We ended that field seeing 10 or so pheasant, bagging two roosters, and my dog pointed a covey of 8-10 quail and we totally blew our shots. I'll be honest, we really only pheasant hunt in SD and when I about stepped into the grass he was pointeing expecting a rooster and it exploded with quail, I was in sesnory overload! It was awesome to see wild quail on public ground, just totally wasn't ready for it.

We hit 5 or more fields and got up pheasant in every field. We missed a couple shots that were at distance but probably should have been bagged and ended our day and a half hunt with 3 roosters on public ground. Given our short window, going at it completely blind, missing a couple shots, I'll take it as my dog worked great and I wasn't working. We also got into 2 more coveys of quail which probably had a total of 20+ birds which was really encouraging.

We hunt SD every year and KS is still nothing like SD pheasant hunting but it is better than it was that last time we went a few years back. KS is half the drive time for us and has legitimate quail numbers, I'm hoping the pheasant numbers will continue to climb which would really make it appealing. We'll probably be back but definitely not cancelling the annual SD trip just yet :)

Met some great hunters at the hotel, swapped stories and had an all around enjoyed the trip.

Sounds like you had a pretty good trip. Hate to hear about the incident with the other two hunters. Hard to believe someone would try that at all but especially this time of year when competition for WIHA is pretty much non-existent.

Maybe they actually were telling the truth and didn't see you! Sounds like they were cordial after they saw you and they were not violating any regulations.

You are right, give'em the benefit of the doubt. Summary is we got birds up in all fields, bagged a few, dogs got good work in, and made some more memories in the field chasing bird dogs.

Yeah, figured it might come across that way...not my intention bow hunter. Honest mistakes happen, I guess I was just assuming a couple guys with dogs about shotguns reach away in blaze orange on a sunny day would be hard to miss. Mistakes happen, ultimately no harm done. No need to start an argument over it or get rude here, realize that's often hard on a forum, went ahead and edited my original posts. No point in focusing on any potential negatives. Have a good rest of season all.

Yea I know. I just wanted to make a point that not everyone hunts the same, and those that don't are not necessarily inferior. I get frustrated myself but we simply can't control what everyone else does. Hunts get ruined on public land and private for that matter, but that doesn't make every hunter we encounter a bad person whether they have made an honest mistake or not. Its public land and things happen. Kind of funny for me in that I have not seen one group of pheasant hunters this year.
