Rattlers

Just a quick heads up. Friend killed a Rattler last week in Lane County crossing the road. It was 72 degrees that day. Warm days are bringing out some snakes I guess, so be careful.

If there's one good thing about living in the Tundra.
Ain't no Rattlers up here.
I do come across them often though during my Sept trips to the MT grasslands.

It is usually off my mind in the Winter, but now I am more aware of conditions.

They'll come out on a warm day in the winter and move around....or sun themselves on a sunny clear cold day (even if you think its too cold) if their hole/den entrance puts them in a spot to catch some sun. My Setter can attest to that on a 50 degree day with 10-20mph winds.

Damn thing was outside of a prairie dog hole but protected by grass from the wind. Was around 10 for the low the previous night. So go figure.

One of the farmers that lets me hunt birds/deer hates snakes and a couple of his friends know this. In the middle of this damn Polar Vortex shift we've been getting, it warmed up a few days in the 50's - 60's or so then the cold front blew in suddenly again...anyways his friends found a whip snake sitting on some asphalt road as it had come out to warm itself, then got caught outside when the cold blew in and died. Thing was around 5' long -- they had some fun with the farmer when they laid it up on the square bails he feeds to his calves --- Never seen a guy so afraid of snakes -- he wouldnt even touch it to show us in his burn pile -- but anyways quite comical and well it helped to dispel the thought I had that snakes hibernate all throughout the winter.

I avoid the "rattlesnake" pasture unless its 40 or below.

Couple years ago Opening Weekend, four of us were out in SW Kansas. One guy had snuck one of his son's fake snakes outta the house and brought it along. It was a ceramic rattle snake and it was all coiled up with it's mouth open looking like it was getting ready to strike. We took a break for lunch and my buddy put that snake by the back tire. Our other buddy had no idea he brought it and was walking along the truck to get something and about crapped himself jumping trying to get away from the "striking snake". I believe in mid-air he yelled "Oh my Jesus!" It was awesome! To this day we all still laugh about it.

YEA it is.....I would have FREAKED OUT. I heard a rattler 1 time in my life ...was out dog training in the summer was very close range in high grass....I collared the dog and I got the hell out of there FAST

LOL you all don't now anything about rattlesnakes. LOL we have 13 different types of the buzzworms down here in Az. If you think your not going to run into them, no matter what part of the year your going to get bite. I saw two the other day, I just back off and go around them. No need to kill them they are just wanting to eat. They are part of nature and they have a roll in it. They don't want to bite you because they can't swallow you.

just the same...I'd rather not see one at all...Im just worried about stumbling into one and suprising it and getting bit...or my dog getting bit...he WILL try to eat it I'm sure....

Then your dog needs to be snake bite trained. There are all kinds of people out there that do this. I have had dogs go though this and have never had a problem with snakes. Check it out please for your dogs sake.

Kill it and grill it!!!! They are pretty good!!!

No Bleu,

They do taste good, but they do more good when they are alive. I don't like killing them just because they are snakes. I will kill them if my dog will not back off. But they are mostly harmless if your paying attention.

I'm a camp meat type guy. :)
Sept MT badlands, not hard to find a rattler. Sure don't want the pups to think I'm hunting them.

Bleu, How do You go about cleaning a Rattler?

Cut off the head. a few causalities have been from "dead rattlesnakes". slit the skin up by the head end, and peel it down like a squirrel skin, clean out the body cavity, and cut in chunks, grill it! One of my live off the land experiences, along with frog legs, barbequed raccoon, roast haunch of beaver, I'm sure there's more. Beer is a requirement for some of this.

From reading, not experience, folks in the know suggest burying the head, because of the reflex action that goes on after decapitation, some people have been bitten by the severed head. May just be folk-tale, but stuck in my memory.

Rattlesnakes and cottonmouths make me happy about Winter in Wisconsin. :)

Their head will open/close etc after its cut off for some time.

If you get "bit" by a snakes severed head Im afraid the Darwin award should be sent your way. You'd have to be sticking your fingers/hands near the business end voluntarily and inside the mouth for this to happen.

Good info you guys thanks. :10sign:

How about throwing the dang head in the campfire. :)

OLD, Beer has been a major part of my camping, cooking for a long time. I've been known to take a trip into town (50+) miles, just for fear of running out of the stuff. Not short of anything else.

For what ever reason:confused: I have tried frog legs. I'm not a total wimp:eek:
I just, couldn't do it. Couldn't swallow, gagged, choked, puked, you name it I did it.

We did however grow up on wild game. Snapping turtle, squirrel, Snow shoe. Mom made all that stuff delicious.
My brother and I once on a adventure, killed and cooked up a muskrat.
One time only, I'm not recommending that.
