i read and hear alot of hunters talking about range refering to pointers. they all want one that ranges 600yrds +.......why? why would you want a pointer that far out? just curious i guess
Not sure why everyone takes any "long" yardage and equates that to where a dog works....that may be the best question.
Most care little about a max distance and more about the dog hunting where the birds are found....near or far.
If, I reckon, a pointing dog maxes out for some reason at 50 yards then it will take a while to either cover ground laterally or distance wise in search of a bird...so, they speak of enjoying a dog whose distance is not limited by a tossed rock.
But, why might some say what you are suggesting?
Perhaps, it implies they have a superior dog or they are somehow superior in having and handling such a dog.
Perhaps, scarcity of birds finds that a dog with range(600 is a mite silly in most areas) helps....as does hoping the bird holds.
Perhaps, it is advantageous in a trial dog when trial grounds are pretty clean cover-wise and the firstest with the mostest may win a judge's eye.
Perhaps, folks lie, misjudge or exxaggerate.
Perhaps, some like to stir a still pot.
