Pretty excited

Along with a Western SD trip planned for Halloween weekend we just planned a second trip to Mott ND. It's been on my destination list for a few years now. Last year I had trouble getting time off from my A-hole crotchity old foreman who cares about nothing more then work. This year I went over his head and called out man power guy (his boss) months in advance. I explained the situation about these trips can't be thrown together at the last minute especially with two buddies flying in. He said I work my a** off and should go every year and he'll deal with my foreman :) He was also pissed I didn't call him last year :) :) I just didn't feel I'd been there long enough to stir the pot.

To top it off my wife got me the Hero 3 GoPro silver edition for my birthday.

If anyone has been to the Mott area and can provide any insight I'd really appreciate it.

What are the dates that you are planning for the Mott trip?

Great place to hunt. Been going out there late season for the past few years. At that time you will find frozen water, possibly snow, lots of birds bunched together. Typical late season, the more guys the better to surround those elusive rascals. Private land is the best by far.

Thanks guys--We won't have private land just the plots properties. It will be one of those trips where I'll just be thrilled to be there and worry about limits another time. We have four guys and six dogs planned. I'm more excited about this trip then our SD trip where we had limits in minutes last year.

im still looking for that peace of public land that is better then the private land???

after the 1st WK or 2 of hunting season id take private land any day if the habitat was the same... hunter pressure is for the most part much much less on private lands...

wish you the best of luck byrdoglvr i will be out in that area my-self on the opener & see what the habitat looks like & will be in touch with you... you should do fine hunt smart & hunt some un posted lands if need be or other lands...

i plan to head out around the 1st wk or 2 of DEC my self i will be scouting some areas for the late season hunt also on opener if you are not set in stone on hunting every day around the MOTT i may be able to help you out & put you on some birds??? & or if you open to 1 more gun & hunting dog i mite could join in on the hunt??? mite be cheaper on gas also??? i need more help surrounding the late season roosters on my hunt i think??? so far my DEC hunt is me & my dog & maybe 1 other guy i doubt will go???

let me know what you think byrdoglvr??? i will PM you also...

what kind of bird dog do you have??? what other kinds of dogs will be on you trip with you all???

keep in touch & if not good luck & safe hunting to you & yours byrdoglvr

If you run out of places to try Indian Creek WMA west of Mott and South of Regent is over 1000 acres and worth checking out. A little off the beaten path which is good. Last time I was there 2008, they even had hook ups for camping. Great place to hold a horseback field trial.

It's surrounded by choice private land, some of which is leased up by outfitters which makes it a good place to try on the fringes. I've hunted it and had good luck. Lots of native prairie type grasses etc...

Anyway, that would keep you busy for awhile.

bummer comment to see for all us DIY public land hunters out there... i mean there is like 1-2 WMAs out there like they dont get hammered enough already??? especially when guys are already saying the PLOTs lands are being hayed & have no grass cover...

anybody who has a ND PUBLIC LAND ATLAS will see & try the biggest red WMA in that area just a heads up byrdoglvr or any on-line scouter also there will be guys camping there & hunting from camp it gets beat up ask a local biologist if u think im trying to scare you guys away...

hope its not as beat up come DEC. for u guys???

P.S.
feel free to PM guys about specific public land spots nothing wrong with that...

Indian Creek is surrounded by some great private land. All of which is leased or outfitter owned.

Those outfitters bring their clients into the Indian Creek WMA. They make sure their pheasants don't hang out much in the public areas.
Sorry but it's a fact.
Dec is the time to do Indian Creek, good luck!
Indian Creek has some fine pheasant habitat, lots of Russian Olives, cattails and tall grasses.

Indian creek is large enough that I still wouldn't hesitate in trying it, especially the last hour before sunset. We never encountered any other hunters when we were there in mid Nov. December should be fine.

Beggers can't be choosers when it comes to public land near Mott or Regent.

who are the beggers??? us DIY guys who dont ask a sole to hunt the public lands for free??? id feel like a begger if i PAYED TO PLAY to hunt private lands...??? or was out knocking on farmers doors the day B4 opener...???

but outing a exact peace of property on-line for all to see for ever is kinda bad it puts a big target on the area for any on-line scouters... many guys who STILL HUNT the area already probably dont care for the press either???

PMs are better if somebody googles these specific WMAs our forum threads show up & do for years after the comment... i come across new hunting forums or threads from forums all the time when doing info searches on-line for new hunting areas...

like i said in the MT forum people dont out there specific private land honey holes towns townships & or citys or wear they were able to obtain private hunting land by just asking nice farmers on these forums why is there a need to out specific public land spots to all??? its disrespect to all others who found & hunt the land already brings many more hunters to a area needlessly...

jim spencer a outdoor writer from AR routinely outs specific public land turkey hunting spots in the magazines he writes for & on on-line publications & forums when asked why he does this??? he said well most the spots i give up i will never hunt again for what ever reason its ruff terrain or to far away ETC. any way many bashed him for that i agree 100% why out a area you will never hunt again??? call me selfish but thats just not cool for the other hunters using the area to direct others to specific public land spots VIA magazines & public on-line forums it just puzzles me???

if we all did a little more of our own research B4 we went hunting it would be a much more satisfying hunt for us all & we mite not all end up at the same public lands lol

hope all goes well in DEC for bydoglvr & his crew

Thanks for the replies everyone. I'm not looking for anyone to tell me their hot spot. Maybe just areas to avoid. Or terrain to hit come December. I'm not one of those hunters that says I hear Aberdeen is good let's go there. Chamberlain let's go there. Etc. Just doing a little homework!!

Geez, take it easy musterlander. Public hunting areas are there for anyone with a map to see?

Indian Creek is no secret. Any public land in the midst of of Mott/Regent is going to be well known and well used early in the season. December you'll have it all yourself.

No need for a PM to point this out.

you totally missed the point birdshooter... some people just dont get it... treat the public lands like you do your private lands... if you have any private lands we can hunt & you would like to point us all to id go buy a PLAT MAP? or better yet post it here on the forums for us... or PM what ever works???

i realize that its no secret by why pile onto that??? im sure like you are that byrdoglvr would of found & hunted that WMA if you mentioned it or not just like you said... i mean its the only & biggest WMA in the hole area...

byrdoglvr i love doing the research & finding new areas to hunt & once you find a area & you find some good public lands to hunt it makes you feel good... if in doing research i see a article or forum thread that said such in such a town we killed em & many other reports say the same & im in the area i will stop by & try it or the area in close proximity its only natural to do so...

you totally missed the point birdshooter... some people just dont get it...

Ahh... no, I understood your point pretty well.

You sound pretty young the way you talk. I bet... Juuust a hunch though..... you've been spending some time over at Nodak outdoors in the Pheasant hunting forum haven't you??? :) HUH!!! Yep.. I knew it, it's coming out loud and clear "NO INTERNET SCOUTING"

Now take your ball and go home sonny. ;)

typical forum smart guy i see A birdshooter??? i see you are 53 birdshooter a quick view of my profile would show im 28 im sure u looked at my profile?

53 little to old not to understand basic public land courtesy & how to speak in general terms about public lands...

many guys have to try to show off on these forums & try to out do others on info & or saying i hunted here B4 ETC. or by posting piles of birds & then we never here from them again??? but honestly u said it your self brydoglvr would of found that public land for him-self if u outed on-line or not correct??? so what good did telling a guy about a peace of public land he would of already found on his own??? u just put pressure on public lands needlessly in my eyes & a few others that have PMed me saying wish ur post was erased lol 2 different guys said as much thus far... im not alone man & they were over 28...

when i said to byrdoglvr that if i hear of good hunting in a certain area of a state im hunting & i would go try it out that was a example of just how people with big mouths on-line & in magazines mess up public lands by just mentioning they slayed what ever species of animal on that public lands... all others that read that get the idea in there head its going to be that EZ for me as well & hunt the area... ive seen it happen for deer turkey pheasant & prairie chicken & fish...

your last post BIRDSHOOTER maid no valid point or gave any reason for outing public lands by exact name??? the smart a** comments that dont pertain to the topic at hand only gets nosey mods telling guys to stop... PM me any comments about age & take n my ball & going home...

like i said if u wanted to just be a nice guy please post some private lands we all can go hunt in ND by just knocking on a door... people dont give guys on these forums that kind of info so why give up exact names of public lands??? any valid response to that id be more then happy to hear em birdshooter???

as for the NODAK outdoors forum comment??? you are wrong once again my confused friend i have no account or screen name or handle on NODAK outdoors so who ever you think i am your wrong!!! i have looked at the NO DAK outdoors forum a few times over the years & looked i think last wk but all that was on there was a few guys arguing about if there should be a youth pheasant season the wk B4 the regular pheasant opener what a cry baby let the kids hunt is my view...

what birdshooter was there some other hunters on the NODAK outdoors forum that felt the same as me & at least a few others on this forum about the no need to name exact public lands & or exact towns on public forums & in magazines??? i go look for my-self at the NODAK outdoors & try to figure out your last comment...

i dont know why i would take my ball & go home??? its not like i was shut down by ur off topic post birdshooter??? if u think you got me on that post good for u man that was a great post & i guess comeback to my comments?

ill take my ball & go home now... i could say some useless old age comment but that is needless same as the take ur ball & go home now sonny comment??? im not scary i would express my views in person or on forums thats not the case for many on these forums just like when people are in there cars the yell & say rude things to others on the road but dont do it when not in the car???

ok MODs i will not post any more comments directed towards birdshooter so no need to step in on the forum thread...

again good luck byrdoglvr on ur late season ND hunt....
