Wow! Nice long tail on that one! It must have been one of those well fed snare nares…
Actually those dumb pheasant have short tails,or no tails.Ive only run into one bunch of those in my life, and some on that fondu farm near Gregory.Montana has released a lot of those birds, and I'm totally against it. They probably don't survive much past the first two weeks of the season. Those golden eagles will feast on those things.

This was one tough old bird. Honey had to drag him out of where he dug in and I had a devil of a time ending him. Rumor has it, he's a retired grabass police (Post in thread 'Old roosters are tough, or tough roosters are old?' https://forum.ultimatepheasanthunti...h-or-tough-roosters-are-old.27490/post-316629). His police training must have been where he learned to flush wild before Honey got a whiff of him and while I was looking the other way. Apparently he didn't get high marks in stealthy wing beats, however.

Forecasts were good so I threw my dogs in my truck, drove 2 days and got in last night. 20 to 30 mph winds today so I spent time fueling up my truck in town and scouting some new areas. One had already been hayed so I took that off the list. Got my dogs out for a quick hunt when the wind died down a bit....really just to stretch their legs. Guys are out deer hunting so I put orange vests on my dogs. Gotta go when you can.
