Pheasants are Crowing

North of Valley Falls-

chuckling- how far north

think you're full of it- I hunted just to the West and a bit north of Valley Falls for years- had a freind who liked the area-

poor- poor to piss poor all thru 80's into the late 90's
yeah- you could find a covey 1st weekend- untill the---- shot it out
you'd run into a pheasant- maybe a rooaster even- but you went all day

but heck- I know a guy who raised pheasants and let them loose a week before the season started- his words " got to let a few loose every now and then so these city dudes would think there are birds here"

Man dude seek some help. I don't know how any of us have existed this many years without your help. You get into it with everyone who disagrees with you. Now you are going to come on here and call me a liar. Your like the Forrest Gump of UPH. You have lived everywhere, hunted everywhere and done everything. Remember life is like a box of chocolates. Isn't that what he says?

Not to worry Carptom... Shadow just earned his final ban. I say final because he has been temp banned before for this very reason. He is now perma banned, and will have to find a new forum to belittle other members.

In other news, I talked to a warden up a Perry Lake two years ago while Whitetail hunting, who told me people had been harvesting pheasants there.

I have an uncle in Topeka who has been shooting pheasants at Perry for as long as I can remember. Not a lot, but he shoots a couple there every year.

Back in the seventies and early eighties the upland opener at Perry was a big deal. There would be cars lined up everywhere to hunt, kinda like it is out west now. When I was a kid we would go up there opening day, and out west the second weekend so we could hunt quail. My dad had pointers so it was all about quail.

Seeing a few here in the nw corner. Had some good rains again this spring so far. Wheat is a knee high now. Been warm so I would expect a lot of early nesting. Hope it doesn't turn cold.

No new pheasant reports from me, except that the same bunch by Tuttle Creek is being spotted pretty frequently. Hope they make a lot of babies.

While not totally related, or even remotely related:eek:, I hit a bobcat with my truck Saturday morning South of Wamego. It was the first bobcat I have ever seen alive, but only for a split second as it sprinted from the ditch to commit suicide. Shame. The fur would have been really gorgeous in the Winter, and it was a big cat too. If there is an upside, maybe I saved a quail nest or two.

I went out and helped my tentant spray my wheat with fungicide in Finney County. We saw around a dozen hens and a handful of roosters in 270 acres. We also saw several pairs of quail. I did a lot of driving around the Dighton area looking at some ground for sale, and saw quite a few pheasants. There are plenty of birds to have a good hatch if conditions remain favorable.

If things just go normally, that stubble should provide excellent hunting.

I saw a nice healthy pair of quail out on the 16th hole at Colbert last week.

I would like to hunt out at Colbert some time. Along holes 5 thru 8 and most of the back 9.

Back in the mod 80's I ran dog in that area a few times, and there were lots of quail. But in the mid 80's we had quail everywhere.

Hoping for more rain! ... but not too much! :D

Years ago I shot a pheasant on some public hunting around Perry. There's some good looking habitat there.

Perry did used to be a big deal on the pheasant opener. Was alot of cars out there on opening weekend back in the day. I drove through there this year and I don't remember seeing 1 car anywhere. I haven't shot a pheasant there for a couple of years now either. I can remember back in 80's duck hunting with my dad and it wasn't uncommon to shoot a pheasant on the way to the marsh carrying in decoys.
