spoke to someone that I know who drives around 25 miles one way to work...she said she hasn't seen pheasants like this in a long, long time...lots of little ones, too...now, she isn't a farmer, a hunter, etc, but she has lived in the same area for a long time and has some sense of what "a lot" is vs. "not a lot"...I liked the report!!!!!

Combining wheat was quite encouraging. I did see some late hatch birds though.

I was out cutting CRP today, and saw pheasants. There was corn on one side and cover crops on the other so they could be anywhere but I did see them in the CRP that I was cutting.

I walked a small chunk of ground this evening with my dog. He found 3 broods all containing about 10 youngsters in them. He had a couple other track jobs that went towards a road so I pulled him off of those. I haven't seen that many young ones in this small area....in like ever.
I was hearing some mature roosters cackle off in the distance as the sun set also.

OH, y'all are killing me! My old heart is going to explode by October. It sounds by all the of the post that it looks very promising this year. I can't take it:p

I think i'll shoot some clays with the kids between services today:thumbsup:

I hooked the computer up to the tv and watched some Pheasant hunting videos last night, and my dog was shaking the whole time. When i woke up this morning, she had my hunting vest pulled down and was laying on it. Coincident? I think not ;):)

What part of the state are you guys talking about?

I hunt the New Holland - Corsica - Platte area.

Well I have been haying CRP and spraying wheat stubble and other areas and the numbers are way up. I am not predicting 2005 but much better than last year.

just returned from SD...went for a 15 mile drive this am between 7:30-8:00 am...saw lots of broods, looked like good #'s in each brood...cover very lush and green, probably didn't see many of the birds. Overall, looking good!!!!

Nice report BB! I am on my way to the farm this morning. Might have to do a similar cruise if the dew is heavy.

Supposed to by 98 for a high today. Yuck.

Got trail cams out all over farm now too and am trying to see what the whitetail population looks like. I know there are a few more tags than last year so that is a good sign.

On checking out my land in Tripp and Lyman Counties a bunch of birds plus prairie rattlesnakes. The hot headed prairie rattlers would strike at my shadow.
Lyman County had more snakes than Tripp. Be careful if the weather is warm.

I hate those dawn rattlers. If you aren't careful they can sure ruin your day in a hurry. :(

One year while doing some pre-season scouting up around Mobridge, the high water in the Missouri River had pushed some of them up into the Indian Creek Recreation Area campground where we were staying. To mimic my wife's expression:

Well, 98 it was when I arrived and about 58 is what it feels like now. Nice cold front to turn thoughts towards fall.

I was encouraged to flush up some more broods when moving about the property yesterday. I only touch a sliver of it and still hard time estimating whats out there. Most birds were flushed on edge of harvested winter wheat stubble. Doing high stubble management this year as operator uses a shelborn stripper head and leaves stubble about waist height. We just designed the cover crop to be seeded into that shortly here. Hunters friendly to exclude radish or turnip so no one is rolling their ankles out there.

Seeing different height birds and roosters getting color already.
