Perry Lake Area

I understand Internet scouting is a no no but I have some general questions. If you would like just pm me some thoughts or answers.

I live in KC with a pointig dog and it's not always easy to get out. But when I want to stretch the dogs legs for a couple hours I head to hillsdale lake and let him run around. Hillsdale is far from a hunting Mecca but does give me some time with my dog. It's over hunted and populated all year round. My question is if I wanted new scenery and see Perry WA within a comfortable drive would I encounter the same sort of conditions?

No offense, but you shouldn't be taking your dog to any of the public hunting areas to "just run around". Unless, by "just run around" you mean actual hunting.
I'd be pretty upset if I were set up to turkey/deer/...whatever hunt, and some guy messed up my hunt because he was just walking his dog.

Ksduckhntr, public hunting areas are there for everyone's use. Being public land, interaction between hunters is inevitable. Run your dog and do your best to go where no one else is visibly using. If you're hunting, then go where the birds are. It's public, eventually your path will cross another. It's expected!

I was under the impression, that it was against regulations, to run your dog on public hunting. Don't you have to be hunting to be able to run the dogs?

I believe the signs say no dog training. Not sure about just letting them run though.

The Kansas Public Lands Regs state under section c that noncommercial training of hunting dogs subject to any provisions or restrictions as established by posted notice. That means that every area may be different. The local restrictions should be posted on the information kiosks on the area. Check with the manager there at Perry at 785-945-6615.

Sorry sarcasm didn't come through on that. Running around = hunting (with the slim chance of actually kicking something up on such high pressure public ground) I am very cautious of other hunters when hunting on public. Even though it's public no reason to ruin anyone's day or start an in needed altercation.

public is public...while i wouldn't intentionally jack up someone's hunt, the area is for my use as well...its public!

I have never hunted at Perry so I can't help you out with that. I have however hunted hillsdale. I have the same thoughts as you about it

I picked up on it, haha. I go to marginal areas very close to home "hunting" with very little expectation of success when the dogs and I are stir crazy.

I wouldn't hesitate to try Perry, personally. I wouldn't expect much, but it is as good or better than Hillsdale.

I live right by hillsdale and its fairly simple to see when a vehicle is at a particular spot and roll on to the next one. I unfortunately see hillsdale as the next shawnee mission park with more weekend picknickers and boat traffic every year but there is no reason you cant take your dogs out there for a run and just avoid bowhunters etc. I would rather see a bird dog and owner there than the holier than thou horse riders who are far more rude than anybody I see out there with bird dogs , beagles , coondogs. They ride their horses right down the middle of the road and everyone of them claims to have been nearly shot because hunters are morons. Cant fix that kinda stupid.

Hillsdale has birds on it and I don't think it gets that much pressure at all mostly duck and deer hunters keep going there you will find them they are there I have hunted it lots just not in the last few years
